Create the shortcut folder on the root, right beside your "BlackBerry" folder. Extact config.xml to the "shortcut" folder using Windows Explorer, accessing your memory card as a removable device. Install as many shortcuts as you want on your BB, using Desktop Manager's application installer. I edited my config.xml file in notepad, directly on my PC, right in the shortcut folder. The PNG images are direcly associated with the shortcut number, so your first shortcut's PNG is named shorcut1.png, the second is named shortcut2.png, etc. The PNG's need to also be stored in the shortcut folder alongside config.xml. The one thing I noticed, is that when I pull my battery, the PNG's don't stay associated until you click on them, then they refresh.
thank you

Weird, I got the following when posting from my Curve 8310. I see the reference to the right model, but why posted BB 8703e?

I always love an upgrade. However, with the exception of the occasional hang when launching a shortcut in the old version, what else is upgraded? It seemed a little more complicated to setup than the 2.1.2 version, though I suppose that will change when it's packaged up properly. I was "hoping" for the icons to "stick" when the device was rebooted. Is that in the works or is it still just not possible?

I too was having issues with hanging, but it wasn't occasional, it was consistent. This version works a lot better for me, hands down, but the install process is a bit convoluted at the moment.

I did ease installation by copying all the extracted files to the SD card and then just using the Explore feature in Media and clicking on the .jad files I wanted shortcuts for. Will make reinstallations easy if the device has to be wiped as everything you need is on your SD card.

I've tested the PNG's I've posted, which all work. They are a bit over 40X40, but they seem to fit the screen ok, and look a little better larger. I'm testing it on my Curve 8310 using the BB Dimension Zen theme, so please let me know if there are issues with the sizes in other themes, and I can scale them down.

Also let me know if anyone has any requests, I can work up PNG's pretty fast. I've also been testing these out on different backgrounds, and they look pretty good on all backgrounds so far.

i have been using the other web shortcuts for a while; i have been trying for hours to install this one and still cant figure it out. i might have to go back to the other one until the step by step instructions are out.

I wonder if that's the problem,i dont have the blackberry folder on my 8 gb sd card,i skipped it to be able to use it with all 8 gig, if not i would only have 3.6 gig of room, and im also not using roxio to put any of my video's-music-pictures on it im doing them directly until 4.3 comes out, when i did create the shortcut file before it did show up but then non of my vid's or music would show and as soon as i took the shortcut file out they were back,i have been using 2.1 for a few months now so i guess 4.3 will fix it all.thanks for the help!!!

Yeah, I was unsure of the folder structure, since my SD card was previously in my Moto Razr with a slightly different file structure, so I formatted it on my BB. Not sure if that would cause it though as long as the shortcut folder is directly on the root of the card? Weird.

i wish it was a piece of cake. i have been going at it since this morning. i keep peeping at this tread to get info on how to do it but no luck so far. i tried exactly what i read and nothing works for me. im getting an error on my device saying no file named config.xml exsists in shortcut. at first it keep saying sdc card need for this application to work. now im stuck on this now. but it keeps motivating me to keep trying when i see that other people are having sucess with it. im going to keep trying until i drop dead asleep!

Did you place the config.xml file in the shortcut directory on the card? Once you do that you need to edit the config.xml file to add your link and title. You can just connect your BB to the computer and then edit the config.xml file with notepad directly from the pc. Edit as per jfisher's instructions above. Then all should work. Be sure you disconnect the BB from the computer when you launch the shortcuts. The BB can't see the card when it's plugged into the pc.

i did that; when i go to note pad to edit the the short cuts do i delete everything and start from scratch or do i type the info between the stuff thats already there? im going to try everything all over again. i think its on the card. cause if i unplug my device i dont see it anymore.

I simply opened it (from the directory on my sd card) added in the url's and labels in the proper places as outlined above, then just closed it and it prompted me to save it.

You can also edit it while on your pc's hard drive, save it and then copy it back to the card.

If you're opening with Notepad, just edit and save it. You don't need to do a "save as." it will save it as whatever it was to begin with. Just make sure that on the card it says config.xml

Just let me know if I'm pissing anybody off with these PNG's. Here's one for Grand Central (http://m.grandcentral.com):

You still have to install each shortcut using the .jad or using desktop manager and the .alx/.cod's.

Yes, install the shortcuts via Desktop Manager. Once installed, name the PNG according to which shortcut it is. So say you only have shortcut 1 installed, and the following config.xml in your \shortcut folder:

Code:
<config>
    <shortcut1>http://m.grandcentral.com/</shortcut1>
    <title1>GrandCentral</title1>
    <shortcut2></shortcut2>
    <title2></title2>
    <shortcut3></shortcut3>
    <title3></title3>
    <shortcut4></shortcut4>
    <title4></title4>
    <shortcut5></shortcut5>
    <title5></title5>
    <shortcut6></shortcut6>
    <title6></title6>
    <shortcut7></shortcut7>
    <title7></title7>
    <shortcut8></shortcut8>
    <title8></title8>
    <shortcut9></shortcut9>
    <title9></title9>
    <shortcut10></shortcut10>
    <title10></title10>
</config>
Download the Grand Central PNG above, and rename it to shortcut1.png. Copy shortcut1.png to your /shortcut folder on the root of your BB, the same folder as the config.xml file. Disconnect the BB from the PC so that the SD card can be seen by the BB. It will show up as a black box at first until you open it. It should then open g.grandcentral.com when you open it the first time. Escape out to your main screen, and the PNG and correct shortcut name will appear.

Wirelessly posted (BB 8703e: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8310/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Does the Black box take you to the website? I'll work on a guide with some screenshots as soon as I get some time.

Does the Black box take you to the website? I'll work on a guide with some screenshots as soon as I get some time.

Is your Grandcentral icon named "shortcut1.png" or "shortcut1"?

It should be named "shortcut1" not "shortcut1.png"

Wirelessly posted (BB 8703e: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8310/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

It is, in fact a PNG file. The reason its not showing shortcut1.png on Mr. Kyoo's screenshot, is that file extensions are turned off. In other words, don't name it shortcut1.png.png.

Right on! Wow, does everyone hide their file extensions? Weird. (Just noticed your post that resolved it).
