PocketDay v5 User Interface Suggestions -
01-15-2007, 04:07 PM
All,
We're now focused on a UI design change for version 5 of PocketDay. Interestingly enough, Yahoo's product has some similar features to what we are thinking of implementing (all of these features will only be available on BlackBerry OS version 4.2 with Trackballs)...
Using the Trackball to scroll Left and Right will bring up a floating icon list to switch views. Views will take up the entire screen so that the following can take place: - EMail screen will show the most recent x emails (read and unread)
- Missed calls will show the phone log
- Weather will show the 7-day forcast by default
- Calendar will show any number of days forward
- You'll be able to have multiple weather screens, PD List, etc.
- Background images will be supported
Of course, you can still use the current PocketDay classic screen if you like as well.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks,
crs

Sounds great - can't wait for a new UI (although I do like the current one)...
Go for it!

Please, please, please...whatever you do. DON'T Bloat the app and make it slower!!!
Whatever you do, ALWAYS allow for us to use the current interface at the current speed we enjoy today. OR, if you DO bloat/slow down the app, allow for the purchase of the old version for old users.
You have NO idea how much I refer to PD everyday, all day. If it changed for the worse, that would be a real bummer.
Other than that, best of luck and I hope you sell loads more licenses and stay around for a long time

We will always keep the current interface running. It's quite efficient and many people love it.
What we're trying to do is provide more options for people and add functionality at the same time. For example, with email you'll be able to see the most recent 50 or so emails (both read and unread)...the most recent phone logs, not just missed calls.
You'll be able to have multiple weather profiles ready and waiting without switching, multiple pocketday lists open without switching, and more.

Functionality is good. Don't forget the shortcuts . The Yahoo interface is really clean. While the app can be slow it can do quite a bit. I have searched my emails using it. The weather is simple. The stocks could be easier. But did I mention how clean it looks. IMO PD looks like very outdated compared to this GUI. Please don't take offense. I assume that is why you are updating it.

nooo...don't listen to Stinsondog!!!
There is NOTHING wrong with "outdated" UI's...or PocketDay's UI for that matter Doesn't look "outdated" to me. It's clean and to the point. NOTHING wrong with that.. (Not that I'm a fanboy or anything... ) LOL
Change, simply for changes sake, has destroyed more SW than I can remember.

I've come from a S60v3 world where I miss dearly the "Active Standby" screen, which I thought was a terrific UI and is in the vein of what Yahoo and your team are looking like. Here are two examples of the screen (not inline linking on purpose):
Landscape:
http://www.thisismobility.com/blog/w...ve-standby.jpg
Portrait:
http://www.mobileburn.com/media/noki...n-IMG_0466.jpg
The row of icons at the top is a configurable scroll list like in the T-Mobile Zen theme you find on the Pearl along the bottom. The items below that are plugins, so you can enable/disable each one. Scrolling down and clicking on an item brings up that app, of course.
I like this... transparent? look-through approach to the UI, and that it also uses the standard phone (theme) UI for the battery/signal/etc. at the very top. It's a very usable UI, uncluttered but functional enough for at-a-glance information that doesn't look junky. There are some themes with this Pearl that come close but not close enough... (Today Plus is about the closest)

Take a good look at Agenda Fusion or Datebook for the Pocket PC. Model your interface and functionality after those apps and yours will sell like hot cakes.

I think it would be great to be able to scroll within a function/module. For example - you set PD to show the last 10 unread emails. But if you hold the alt key (or something) and use the trackwheel, you can scroll within the email module. Am I making any sense?
As always, I would be happy to try and break it

Is it not possible to give a legacy device like the 8700 the option of assigning keys to simulate the trackball instead of hot keys? Could we not assign u, h, j, k, l, n, as up, left, center/enter, right, down? It would add a huge customer base for the new features if this could be accommodated, just a thought.

For me, having one screen with appointments, calls and messages that can be accessed with one shortcut key, as the home screen to pd today screen is important. I usually check the weather, news, stocks but mostly just want fast access to one screen for my main pda information.
The yahoo interface is nice, but I don't want to be spinning a wheel looking for messages. The best thing about pocketday is it is easy to have a customized, fast access view of what is important to the user.

i like the today plus theme a lot. if you could expand on this and have tabs for call logs, calender, messages, stocks, etc this could be very cool. one of the tabs could be most commonly used programs and have their icons. i have a pearl and would like to get back many of the shortcuts lost from the 8700. one key presses to get where you want to go are GOOD ... looking forward to the new UI!

PS - When is the ETA of 5.x?

I just tried the Pocket Day trial version, and initially found it a bit "rough" in appearance. I was a former Dell Axim user, and had been using Spb Diary. I also had tried Pocket Breeze. Both pieces of software had a much "cleaner" appearance. I found that I could not increase the size of the font for my appointments, the weather, etc., and my contacts were not displayed on the Today page. In version 5, you should probably look into these issues, unless I missed the boat.

zoeydanielle,
Hi there, I was reading your post and just thought that I would add a little to what you said (my 2 cents, so dont take offense)...I have also come from a WinMobile background, I have used PocketBreeze and SPB PocketDiary both, but was longing for a device that I could depend on more. Thats when I found the Blackberry. The UI on the blackberry is not yet like those on WM phones, but I think most in here would agree that when it comes to that, that the BB is far superior in other areas like battery life, dependablity (not having to soft reset often), things of that nature. Not trying to slam WM, but I just think that asking for features provided in a WM device for the BB will happen eventually, but not anytime soon, so I wouldnt get your hopes up too high.

Agreed. The main reason I don't use PocketDay is that I don't like the UI. I'd definitely give it another whirl if there were more UI options.

Add me to the list. Not only is the UI poor, the screen is cluttered and very ugly. If it looked like datebook or Fusion, I'd purchase it in a heartbeat.
I also think that PocketDay tries to be too many things. Most of the stuff they offer can be had for free as a stand alone app. Pocket Day should just concentrate on being a great calendar/agenda program. If I want weather, sport scores, etc., they're available all over for no cost.

I disagree. I want something for my calendar but also sports and weather all into 1. You dont have to have tjose on your screen, you can customize.

I know you don't have to have them on your screen. The point I was trying to make is that PocketDay tries to do too many things. Consequently, the application is not very good at any of them. If the authors concentrated on just the calendar/agenda, and not worry about the other things, the result might be a much better application.

I just got my first blackberry after years with the PalmOS with Kyo7135 and all the VZW Treos (600, 650, 700p).
My main app for those devices was Agendus from Iambic Software. One of the things that Agendus did well was provide multiple view options (single day, week, today screen). It allowed for Calendar items and tasks to be displayed on multiple lines if they took up extra area.
I also like the use of icons to be associated with tasks and meetings, and the linking of contacts to tasks and meetings that made it easy to look up a contacts phone number when dealing with a task or meeting.
What Agendus did was combine all the PIM functions (contacts, tasks, and meetings) in to a single user interface with a nice GUI, but still used the native database of the palm.
I know in the Palm world their were many Agendus users and just as many users of Datebk5 from pimlico. Both of these would be good places to look for ideas on layout and additional functionality.
My first impression with Pocket Day is excellent and the customer support I have gotten has been first rate (better turn around than Iambic). I will be purchasing it once the trial period is up.
Can some one explain to me the difference between Pocketday personal and professional?

Look at Pocket Informant -
03-23-2007, 06:46 PM
Coming from the Windows Mobile world, Pocket Informat was my favorite. The customizable today screen put all my essential info on top with quick access to other apps.
Don't restrict yourself to trackball BB's. I have an 8703e and have been frantically looking for a Pocket Informat like interface.

As a convert to BB from PP, I, too, would be grateful if the monthly view could be placed on the main screen and part of the scrolling page.

Been using PocketDay Pro for a while. Makes the BB much more functional and fun to use. A must have app. IMHO... Excellent customer support also. Just looked at the redesigned site and it is kinda slick...

Quick Registration Question. Been running the trial version of Pocket Day Pro for about 20 days. I don't need the features of Pro, so If I purchase the standard version will I need to uninstall/re-install and reset all my view settings? Or will a standard license do the trick with my existing setup?

The standard license entry will disable the pro features. No need to re-install.
