Go to mobipocket.com, and check out their products.
They have a free ebook reader for the blackberry that (on the Pearl at least) supports using the SD card for memory, and has nice library features. Then you can download Mobipocket Creator, which is software for Windows that lets you convert text, html, word, and other formats to Mobipocket format (.prc) that you then load onto your SD card in the directory /eBooks which it will read. Supports cover images, tables of contents, etc.
There are probably other solutions out there, but I recently converted from .txt and read the entire Ender series by Orson Scott Card, Siddartha by Hermann Hesse, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien, all on my Pearl, huddled under the covers, or sitting on a plane.
