BBTools Substitutes & Replacements (BBToday,BBWeather,BBLight,BBCorrector,BBReply) -
04-18-2005, 03:38 PM
You may have heard the news that the wonderful BBTools have been shut down due to legal issues. This is very dissapointing, because the guy (deadstick) did a wonderful job.
His legal issues were probably related to just one utility, but he shut down all his great software which is totally unfortunate, because I bet that some software such as "bbLight" was probably not subject to his legal issues which probably affected just one of his software programs. Totally shutting down even the non-affected software is unfortunate.

You can add PocketDay to the BBReply list since they include this feature.

It's too bad no one open sourced some of these tools, as this would form a basis for alternatives, which now someone has to start from scratch in doing..

Maybe I'm out of line here but if the companies listed above offer the same functions, for a cost, as BBToday did then it has to be one of them that is causing deadstick his legal issues. If this is true then there is no way I want any of my money to go to that company. Since I can't know for sure at this point I'll just have to pass on all of them.
I really wish we had more details on which app was the problem and who threatened legal action.

That figures. Today I finally need to have an app like BBReply, and just yesterday it got pulled. I certainly hope someone puts that up soon somewhere, ANYWHERE. Heck, I have a ton of space, I'll host everything except BBSpellCheck if it's allowed.

From reading the messages yesterday, it appears that it was none of the big guys who caused the tools to be pulled but a small software developer who objected to the name of the speller as being too confusing with the name of its own (pay) product. No big conspiracy that I can see.
Given that the dispute appears to involve only one product (the speller), I suspect that deadstick my be playing somewhat of a poker game here by pulling all products in the hope that pressure from people like us will put the objecting software company on the defensive so it will drop its request to change the name of BB Spellchecker. Or maybe deadstick is just fed up with putting a lot of work producing excellent products which he gives away for free, and the thanks he gets is being threatened with a law suit. I suspect its a combination of both.
Hopefully cooler heads will prevail. I did download BB Today 1.5 last week and find it a marvelous program.

I would like to announce that I now have copies of the latest source code to ALL BlackBerryTools utilities.
I am pondering what my next step is.... Since I want to satisfy all parties involved, including commercial entities.
I think a simple rename to "bbSpellCheck" to "bbCorrector" is what I'm going to do, before giving it to someone to put back onto SourceForge. I'm doing this for all you little guys...
If any concerned entities would like to contact me, or that there are any other legal issues, please send me an email to ![[email address]](http://www.blackberryforums.com/?emailimage=8c120f6fbac1cd738c424d62509cb584) .

Where do I find screen shots of all these programs. Where is the main website?
May the Blackberry be with you.
