Of course, you can just disable images from displaying in your email and then no outbound connections are ever made from the application so no charges.

Thanks for the prompt reply. That gives me some hope

Thanks so very much for the OTA download!!! What an amazing difference...and a welcome one at that. The way email was displayed on the BlackBerry was a real sticking point with me...and had me secondguessing myself after leaving my Palm Treo 680 behind. But now...there is no doubt that I will stick with BlackBerry.

But...since I am on an AT&T Unlimited Data Plan and using BIS...am I getting charged extra for using this with TCP/IP connections? This is not a good thing...

Hi Terry,

It depends on your plan. Some companies do charge for access through their gateways, some others don't. With my current plan, I know that I don't, for example. Similarly, some companies charge for data access through the web browser, so not even the potentially upcoming BIS Transport will avoid charges.

I guess the best advice I can give in such circumstances is if you are concerned, contact your provider and ask them for some more details. As I mentioned, images can be disabled from the options if this is a concern. With images disabled, there is no data usage.

Regards,
eZainny.

Thanks. I will check it out...

Can anyone with an AT&T/Cingular plan such as mine shed some needed light here?

Great software still.

Thanks, again...

I've downloaded the OTA trial ... great app !!

I had to set up using BES/MDS connection to get it to work. Question for you ...... does this mean that my BIS email messages go across the corporate BES server, or is it just using the MDS connection? Issue is personal use of corporate computing assets policy.

I downloaded and installed the software today. It was painless to install but the first email I tried to view looked just like it did with the built in viewer, except in yellow. It was the promo email from Compusa for father's day. All the images were HTML links not images.

Did I do something wrong?

Hi aero249,

This connection is used to retrieve images in your emails. It is simply using the MDS connection and will not affect how emails are retrieved. If you disable images from being displayed in your email (from the options screen) then the connection will not be used at all.

Regards,
eZainny.

I installed Ver 1.1 last night. This is a great program. I do have a Reply problem. If I get a PIN message, I have to except the program to be albe to do a PIN replay. I assume this is the same Reply problems others have had. It seems to be hit or miss if you have this problem or not. It is something I could work around for a while but will forget to do from time to time.

So is this being worked on for a future update?

Go into your options icon - advanced options - applications - find the smartview application and highlight it - select the bb button and select delete. This is how to uninstall all applications you want to.

Having major connectivity issues. I am on Cingular BIS 2.3. Tried the WAP connection, which I have set up for my Internet and have been able to see images on sites like ESPN etc, but the User Name and Password do not automatically populate and it won't allow me to edit it. When I click on Test Connection, get the error message of Connection Failure! Please check your radio coverage and review your selections. Tried the same for BES/MDS and TCP and got the same error message after a second of testing. Went back to try and test the WAP and was stuck in spin cycle hell. Any suggestions as I really would like and need to use the app for some of my e-mails.

Just downloaded the Trial version. As everyone else said, it's a great application. Thanks for providing this.

But I found one missing feature:

it does not display foreign language such as Chinese.

I am on 8800 Cingular, BIS, 4.2 OS with Chinese font module installed. All Chinese email displayed properly with BB built in email viewer, but they all changed to "????????" in SmartView.

Is there a way to make SmartView to display foreign language like the built-in viewer?

Thank you!

eZainny,

In the Connection Options section, what exactly is the difference between using the TCP/IP and WAP connection? It would seem that since the TCP system settings are going to be configured to use the same APN as the BlackBerrySmart WAP settings then all data will travel in the same path. Is there something that I have missed?

This program is about to get some competition. Check out this Blackberry Forums thread for a public beta of another HTML e-mail viewer. Click here for Empower beta thread. I use use Chinese characters on my 8700 and can verify that Empower displays Chinese characters correctly.

Downloaded the new 1.1 ota version today. I defiantely have the reply problem. I have my 8300 set to get my corporate email through my company bes, and my personal gmail email through tmobile bis. Even if I reply to a bis gmail, it still wants to send it out through my bes.

I did the same yesterday, and am buying a copy for my wife.

eZainny, I am having some problems with replying - my post may have been lost in the flurry of posts here yesterday.

With version 1.1, sometimes it does not reply from the address the e-mail was received from. I have 4 accounts configured via BIS, and I can't seem to see a pattern.

I can select the correct e-mail, but I was wondering if there is something else going on.

Thanks
Don

It always replies from the "default" messaging system regardless of the message system it was received on. Hopefully he will have a fix soon.

Hi John,

With 1.1, that isn't my experience. In many cases, it replies from the address it was sent to.

I wonder if it's reading the last used address an e-mail was sent from to the contact?

Hi Don,

Sorry about not replying earlier. I've noticed this problem occasionally also - though, I thought I had it nipped it seems that sometimes it picks the wrong address to default to. I'm furiously working on a fix now + adding in some more features.

Cheers,
eZainny.

Yeah...although I am still up in the air about whether or not AT&T will whomp me with useage charges stemming from image display...

I am stoked with this software. I was really considering going back to my Treo since the Palm displays HTML and images very well w/o any modifications...but now I am totally into the BlackBerry. Thanks, for making our email a pleasureable experience.

Will you please let us know when the new version with the "fixed" reply situation can be OTA downloaded? Hopefully you will have it done before my trial period runs it's course with this version...

David,

What dataplan do you have with ATT? I have the BIS personal plan (cingular) , which includes unlimited data. If you have the same you *should not* have any data charges (please double check with ATT, but ... you should be good)

Also, at least for me, the reply issue is not a huge issue, as you have the opportunity to change the reply from address when you're doing the reply message. Don't let that little bugger stop you.

Don

Hi All,

In response to the feedback we have received here, we will be releasing a new trial version soon (I'll come on here and let you all know) which will increase the trial time to 4 days.

If you already had the trial installed, feel free to just uninstall it and install this new trial version when it becomes available.

I'll let you know when it is up.

Cheers,
eZainny.

Thanks, Don. We have the same plan, so I feel a lot better about it. I do have a budget...and nobody paying my bills but me, and even so...using a smartphone and having a data plan is not an inexpensive matter. So, the chance that I would be incurring more charges kinda irked me...but good to see at least somebody has given me a thumbs up.

No...the reply issue is certainly not a dealbreaker. But...it would be a nice feature to have instead of not having it.

Thanks again, eZainny!!

I'm also not on an unlimited plan (Rogers), and haven't been on any plan long enough to assess my data useage (and I keep adding more stuff that uses data) yet. So although I try to be thrifty where I can, I find some emails' first pages are so full of link lines that I have to scroll to find the text parts so I can figure out what it's about -- and so in that regard, I love this program even though it might use more data than I would without.

On a side note (sorry for the partial derail), if an email links to some huge bitmap that wasn't converted to another, more compact format, is that eating up more data? I would guess so (and that it would apply to surfing too), but thought I'd ask.

I am 90% certain that it compresses all images to a much smaller size. Also, if you turn off images it uses 0 (read: zero) data. This means that all those links, etc do not require any additional data to be download. Formatting the email doesn't use data, the only data used is downloading the pictures.

Yep, Trevor is right so you can make that 100% If you turn off images then there is no data usage at all.

Cheers,
eZainny.

I've tried to keep up, hopefully I didn't miss a post about this.

When I hit the "back" button when done reading a message, i end up in the same message minus BBsmart, then hit back again and am in the message list.

Is that normal?

Is that normal?
yes you missed it :>

Hold the back button down and it will go back to the message list. It also has a popup in the program when you first hit back to tell you that..

Might be nice to have a use option that allows the first press of the back button to go back to the message list directly.

Thanks,

Question Is there a way to temporarily disable SV - 06-18-2007, 10:59 AM

... without having to necessarily uninstall the app all together?

I don't know if this is what you are after - but in options, deselect the option to make Smartview your default viewer. E-mails will open up as normal and if you want to view any e-mail with Smartview, click the click wheel and choose BBSmart view.
