Lightbulb Beyond411 4.10 doubles speed of web searches - 05-29-2007, 04:47 AM

The new version 4.10 of Beyond411 features significantly faster web searches; these speedups are similar to those achieved in 4.0 for local search.

It is now available for OTA install at http://thebogles.com/b411.jad.

Web searches (using the Yahoo web search API) are now roughly twice as fast as before. Context menus allow the user to choose between visiting the original and mobile-optimized versions of a page, with optimization performed by Skweezer.

Beyond411 4.1 also addresses many of the privacy concerns (see Google blocks attempts to protect mobile search privacy » Bogle’s Blog ) that currently exist with Google's mobile search service.

It is fast.

For what it's worth, I concur with what others have written on the other thread: it was neat and convenient when results were in order of distance from location. Hope that can be implemented again.

The people have spoken.

Try version 4.11-- phone numbers are back where they were in previous versions and can be dialed with a single click. (Or you can turn them off via options, but they're on by default.)

I now see first hand why search results are not listed in order by distance: I searched for Mario's pizza last night and got two results. The second result was Mark's pizza, but it was closer in distance. If search results were listed closest to fartherst away, Mark's pizza would have shown up first and that was not the place I was searching for.

I've noticed this also. I wonder if Phil can hook us up?

Yes, but if you search on pizza, or grocery, or library, or hospital, as examples, it would be nice to have results in order of distance from your location. If not, then you might suspect a closer location might be on the 3rd page view or something like that. To take your example, if there were several Mario's, you'd want the result in distance order with the closest first. At least that's the way I look at it.
