Don't know if this is common knowledge, but I just found these free app's for IM:

IM+ for Skype (BlackBerry) - Download
IMHere (BlackBerry) - Download*

They probably don't have quite the same scope of functionality as some, but hey, they're free.

*Not supported by 8800 (d'oh)
