Lightbulb Announcing GPS support in Beyond411 - 06-13-2007, 04:39 AM

The new beta release of Beyond411 now supports GPS based search-- for example, you can do yellow page searches and get driving directions from your current location, wherever you are.

You can install the 4.20 beta release over-the-air from http://thebogles.com/beta/b411.jad.

This is a beta release and you may encounter bumps in the road, please let me know of any issues.

Of course GPS functionality is only enabled on Blackberries that support GPS, e.g. the 8800 series. To turn on GPS search mode, select GPS from the location drop down at the top right of the search screen.

Phil, should the beta work on non-gps BBs (just without the gps function)? FWIW I installed on my 8700 (4.1 OS) and got the out of memory error when launching. Went back to 4.12 version.

(Hope to see you add function for BT gps in the future.)

I am getting the same error as IanHummel... "sorry GPS is not available"

I'll have to do some more test I guess...

I had to refresh GPS in Options > Advanced > GPS (the blackberry options, not Beyond411.

I do get an uncaught Exception java.langArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException when trying to access the settings menu in Beyond411. (8800c)

I posted an updated version that won't give the out-of-memory error on older phones.

(Perhaps other developers have experience with this: the out-of-memory error happens when I compile using the 4.2SDK instead of the 4.1 version)

Note: The geonames.org web service is down this evening, so driving directions to GPS locations is temporarily unavailable.

Does this use your gps location instead of "home, work or other"? If so this might be enough for me to hold off for a berry with gps and camera

That's exactly what it does. You have an additional location to search on - Home - Work , Other, and GPS (which will use your current location as reported by the GPS, instead of the pre-defined locations for the other 3)

I have an 8800 on BES and I have to use the "Basic" connection. After downloanding the beta and rebooting I notice no difference in the program. "GPS" is not an option along with Home, Work and Other. Do I have to do something to activate the GPS aspect?

I'm in the same boat except that I have an 8800 on BIS. I do not have the GPS option and cannot use the direct connection. The APN settings are correct.

GPS currently requires a full connection, not a basic one. I can change that in the final release however.

There is new point release 4.20.2 that fixes some small glitches and that makes the menu key on 8800 phones and location dropdown work as expected.

4.20.3 (just out) supports GPS even with a basic network connection.

Hey Phil

long time user of 411 and love it. going to 4.x has been semi mixed for me though..i love some of the new features and some things kind of irk me :(

now with 4.03 i believe i encountered something that semi put me over the top..

having my home selected as my search point i search for something that i know is 14.3 miles away.. sushi ring.. it brings back one selection thats 5.2 miles away and its sushi zen. why couldnt it find sushi ring using the yellow pages option?

i then switch to my work search point, which means sushi ring is 6.4 miles away and once again doesnt find it, but does find sushi zen at 3.4 miles away

is there a way to increase the search area to include outlying areas greater than 5 miles from your search point? is there a new feature setting i am missing and not setting?

thanks in advance and I really do love your 411 app and have swayed a lot of people to use your product as it really true is a great BB app... just as the new 4.x stuff has rolled out I am finding it not as friendly.. maybe its just me..dunno

thanks again

I bumped the radius out to 25 miles, appreciate the feedback. BTW, you might find the new 4.20 release just out to be a useful upgrade, even if you don't have GPS. Menus have been streamlined a little bit.

Thanks for the great program, it is one I use almost every day. Is their any possability that this will work with external GPS? I like my curve much more than my 8800 but I would love to have this GPS functionality.
