Default Skype for BB (iSkoot) - 06-18-2007, 11:59 PM

I sent iSkoot an e-mail asking when they would be developing a Skype client for BB. Well they responded with this:

Can't wait to try it! IM+ Skype has lots of problems, and it might be months before JiveTalk gets Skype.

As I recall, other skype/mobile tools have required you to have Skype running (logged in) on a computer somewhere else. Is that the case here?

is this compatible with the $30/year service from skype? Or does it just use skype out credit?

Also, I've got the 8830, if I'm overseas, and try to make a call with this thingy, am I goign to be for the international call? I don't see the advantage over just using the regular phone service?

I re-installed it and it works. So far I'm using text only. On my 8700g...

Seems to work!

Nice user interface

Contact names do not show that they were re-named

AutoText not working

Notification sound control is on/off only

Notification sound not connected to BB profiles

Clicking on contact starts call! I just wanted to chat

No emoticons

Lots of settings and options missing

I guess it is early beta, still being developed

I believe they want to verify the cell phone number for a reason.

They also offer the option for you to download the app to your PC and install it thou

A brave attempt, but as it is, almost un-usable. Buggy and feature-less. I'll come back and look at it in a month. They have to look at what the big boys are doing - JiveTalk, WebMessenger, IM+ etc.

HAHA.. my dog used to do that.

Well I just used iSkoot for a call to Africa. I think it went really well. You don't have to have Skype logged in on your computer (I didn't have it running) but it does use the minutes from your plan. The sound quality was great for me. It sounded just like a normal call. This is actually the first call I've made using Skype. I have some friends that are missionaries and they're in Africa so that's why I started using it.

Do you have SkypeOut in order to call your friends?

Got it installed up and running. HAVE to say this is the best skype program out there only because of the fact that you dont need to have a program running on your computer to use it. Made calls to several family members in Honduras without a problem, it does prompt your BB to make the call through your phone so you do use your minutes. The interface is VERY easy to use and understand. But so far Ive only made calls succesfuly, when someone tries to call me (not through skypeout), they get a busy signal.

Buggy yes, but Very promising App!

So far, I like the IM+ for Skype program more. It has some problems too. You do not need to have a program running on your computer to use it.

I use IM+ for Skype Software and it is actually not as buggy as some of you may think. I had to make a few calls overseas and the connection was great and with my unlimited plan and Skype unlimited on top of that these calls where pretty much free.

By the way, SkypeIn is now supported

All IM+ Skype voice calls use Skype credit, which is not "pretty much free".

I guess this is not a VOIP application... In other words, skype calls are not made over the data network. i heard other non BB phones can do this.

EDIT: I just downloaded the application. Super nice interface. Successfully logged in and downloaded my skype contacts and skypeout numbers.

What is this if it's not VOIP? I don't understand why a Skype call would use up cell phone minutes? If you're using minutes what's the point especially if you're over seas?

It IS a VOIP app which means you DON"T use your minutes, but you do have to buy the skypeout (3$ per month).
i'll wait for the jivetalk support since the iskoot will eventually charge you anyway.

Cool! Thanks what I need - does it work with skypeout and skypein or just out?

Does it work well enough? I was told by a friend that GPRS is too slow for this.

It is not voip - you are speaking to skype people on your regular BB phone, using regular minutes, plus using skype credit. It is great for calling skype contacts who have no regular phone, and for making cheap skype-out calls. But I use it mostly to IM my skype friends. And I tried iSkoot but found it far inferior to the latest version of IM+ Skype.

Iskoot drains the bb battery quite faster and I feel the bb quite slow, however the app is faster than previous version
