Default BT sync between handsets - 05-17-2005, 06:59 PM

We just got nextel 7520's at work and are having some troubles with migrating phone number information from the old cell phones to the Blackberry's. We have the Outlook stuff figured out but for those that aren't very into the changes we will have to update stuff for them and was wondering if there was a way to transfer contact information from one "Master" Blackberry to another.

So far we have hit a brick wall with outlook because everyone has to set up their own contacts with Direct connect numbers and pin Numbers. And of course nobody has all of this information in one place due to changeing cell plans all the time.

My main idea was that we can connect two blackberry's together via bluetooth but don't see any way to transfer any kind of information once the link is established.

From reading other posts i am assuming that this is not possible due to security restrictions that are built in.

If this is the case is there any other way of getting contact information into the black berry other than outlook?

Maybe you could extract the information from the master blackberry by syncing to the "ASCII Importer/Exporter" and then using that file to set up the contacts on the other Blackberry's?

That's essentially correct... The Blackberry doesn't support any kind of OBEX (Object Exchange) profile, due to security concerns. Basically, the only way to get data onto or off of a Blackberry is through the USB port (Desktop Manager), or over-the-air through a BES-type configuration.

What are you syncing to on the back-end? Are you using a BES, or are you just doing desktop sync to Outlook? Either way, the simplest solution would probably be to get your contact info into your desktop application (ie, Outlook), and then sync to that. There should be a number of tools out there that will allow you to import and export contact information to/from Outlook.

Well that pretty much confirms what I thought. The problem with outlook is getting every one to get their correct personall info into the outlook system corectly. We haven't goten the network people to install the BES on our server yet so us poor field techs are left to figure out workarounds on our own becuse they have already killed our old phones.
