Default Is there a true VOIP application using Int'l data plans? - 07-13-2007, 01:09 AM

Hi. I've ready thru the many postings on gtalk, jivetalk, im+, iskoot, etc. and can't seem to find anything that enables true VOIP calls using the BB (I have a VZW 8830).

I travel internationally, and would like to call Skype and/or MSN users back in the US (who are sitting at their computer) from my BB by sending data over my unlimited plan, rather than paying the $1.50++ per minute + roaming +++ charges. Of course paying the Skype-out fee for calls to landlines would still save big $$$.

I don't care if I need to leave my PC on back at home -- that is ok, if needed.

Everything I read on the forum seems to be text IM as data vs. SMS... but adding VOIP seems like a natural. Am I missing something? I would welcome a referral to an app that provides this functionality. Thanks!
- Neil

This should do what you want. IM+ for Skype Software :: BlackBerry :: Products ~ SHAPE Services

There is so much confusion with BlackBerry VOIP calling! The BlackBerry phone, as far as I have seen, cannot run a true VOIP application yet, mainly because of the phones' processor-speed limitations. But it can talk to people who are using Skype. I use the IM+ Skype program. It is great for calling to people who are on Skype who don't have regular phones, or to travelers who are on Skype who would be charged roaming if you called their forign-based mobile phones. When I call to them, it is not free for me, as a regular VOIP call would be. I am charged my regular T-Mobile voice-minutes (in-coming call) plus I am charged Skype credits. Not bad. Sometimes it is cheaper than dialing direct. And when you are roaming internationally, you still get hit with those huge voice-roaming fees. But real VOIP is free, and some hi-end Nokia phones and other phones use real VOIP programs which operate strictly on the data network, not using regular voice-minutes at all. I tried iSkoot but it has some problems. The IM+ Skype program also does Skype text, which is free, using only the data on my T-Mobile plan.
