Default Beyond411 question... - 07-26-2007, 05:03 PM

First of all, thanks Phil for all the continuing work you've put into this app for all of us.

OK, there's one thing I need to do fairly commonly, and I must not be thinking about it right, because I can't get Beyond411 to do it for me. Scenario is - I know the *name* of a business establishment, and need the phone number (and maybe address.) I type in the known name - and try a search. Yellow pages doesn't return anything, presumably because its looking for a category, not an establishment name. White pages search doesn't return anything, presumably because its only personal listings, not businesses. So, I reluctantly default to a web search - which returns thousands of irrelevant answers hundreds of miles away, because its a relatively common name and web search doesn't incorporate my Beyond411 location(s).

So, what am I doing wrong with this search, which seems like a very common thing to do with a "411" app? How should I be searching?

Not sure if this helps or not, but try part of the name. I've had trouble where I search on the exact name and get nada. But I search using just part of the name and get it. Go figure.

Edit: clarification and second thoughts, for what it's worth, this applies if you want to find Molly's Cafe. If you don't find searching on Molly's Cafe, then try Molly's or Cafe. Of course doesn't help if the business name is simply Molly's.

I find Businesses by name using yellow page search all the time. What do you have in your settings for "City, St, or Zip?"

I could never get it to work with just zip, and one I put in just City and State, it works like a charm.

Dallas, when I know the city the business is located in, I put that, and this is the correct format, I have found (I think):

"McDonalds, Dallas, TX"

In that format, Yellow pages normally returns to me those matching businesses located closest to me according the the "Home" or "Work" address I have entered.

Rereading the OP, I think Moto nailed it. I found same thing: need to use city and state (not zip).

Fred, please--simmer a bit.

You simply "edit settings" in Beyond411, and type in the one you want.

AND, it certainly is not done by posting the same question here three times.

what do you mean type in the one you want? How do we know what plug ins are available? Do you mean if I want Flight Status, I type in "flight Status" under the 1-9 choice slots under edit plugins?

Sorry, no. I meant to say EDIT PLUGINS. At that point, you can SEARCH available plugins, and therein you will see the "code" used for each plugin, i.e., "Flight" for Flight checker or "Dict" for Dictionary.

Entropy, I "believe" the plugins can be found on the PC or the BB, but he still has to enter the settings at "edit plugins" which is not available on your PC.

Unhappy No search results AT ALL - 01-25-2008, 03:18 PM

Can anybody help me? My BEYOND411 used to work great. Now for some reason I return NO RESULTS no matter what I search for. I've tried deleting and reloading the program, altering my connection type, and playing with my browser settings but still no results. Any ideas??

It used to work well for me too when it used to be called Berry411.

It used to search Googlemaps and was able to find all locations and give good directions, now they changed to Yahoo maps.

It used to also used to use Canada411 for white pages searches by default, now they use Google phonebook which currently sucks.

How do I get Beyond411 Yellow Page search results to be listed in the order of proximity, i.e. closest listing should be listed first. Thanks.

It usually does that, but I have noticed that it sorts some of the results incorrectly as well.
