Opinions on VR+ Voice recorder? -
08-07-2007, 12:30 PM
I'm new to the BlackBerry - looking to add functionality.
Any opinions on the VR+ voice recorder software by Shape Services? Is it the best for this function? Are there others I haven't found? Are others better?
Thank you.

I've only owned the software for about a week. I missed the capability of dictating quick reminders, so this was right a treasure. So far, I find it very useful. I've set my left convenience key to VR+ and it does its job. You have the option of saving the recording and categorizing it, but the category option doesn't seem to work yet. I've submitted a bug report today.
The free version works fine. I paid the fee because the price was reasonable and you can send a recording via email and even send a link to a URL where the other party can go to listen to the message.
As far as whether it's the best program out there, I have no idea.

Can someone help? I have an 8300 with about 11Mb free. When I try to record I get a message saying I have less than 5mb free and need to free up space in the folder. I created a special folder for this application and it is empty.
Any ideas?

Shape Services got back to me this morning and gave me instructions on how to "set a category" to a recording. So, it was "operator error". The program works fine for me.
As for jsanchez, the program IS free. The $20 fee is ONLY if you want to be able to email recordings.

I also purchased VR+ recently. It works pretty well, except that if only GPRS is available, it takes a while to send the voice recording via email.
What surprised me was that when I sent a voice recording to another BB, the recipient cannot hear the voice recording. This means that only if the recipient is using a PC, will he able to hear the voice recording sent by email.
Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

I downloaded VR+ from shapeservices web site assuming it was v2.1.2. The trial download of the site is actually v2.1.0. Works great. Loved it, decided to purchase it and did so.
So purchased download link was for 2.1.2, so I thought cool. Tried to install it via desktop and get an error. oh, joy. install it OTA and installs fine. except v2.1.2 has so many bugs.
1) It won't automatically record on start up anymore, even though the setting is set to YES. it always gives a confirmation screen. ugg. **UPDATE: This is a bug for sure as there is no way around it **
2) Auto save the file doesn't work. After recording and you hit the space bar to stop it just sits there for as long as you let it until you hit the esc key and then finally it will write the file. Doesn't matter if it is a 1kb or 100kb file. **UPDATE: ok, yes it does, it is just the button function is what it was suppose to be. space for start and pause. esc for stop. when you hit stop it auto saves it. thumbs up **
3) When you go and delete a recorded file and hit delete, you can no longer hit the 'Y' key but have to select yes instead. **UPDATE: no big deal on this one **
And to top it all off my purchased registration key won't work in either version. **UPDATE: Within 24 hours the issue was resolved and I was provided an new registration code. Thumbs up!!! **
Using and 8310 curve on rogers network with 8310 OS Version 4.2.2.176

You need to edit security permissions on your Blackberry.
1. Open Options/Security/Application Permissions
2. Select VR+
3. Select Edit Permissions from the menu
4. Configure the Security Permissions to "Allow" for all categories.
5. Save the changes
Then please try to use VR+ once more.

This is a Blackberry peculiarity. Blackberry cannot play MP3 files from email attachments.
If you send a recording to Blackberry, send it as URL, not as attachment.

Product is great - customer service is terrible -
11-07-2007, 11:29 AM
Product is really good - and if you want this functionality I don't think there any too many options.
However, I've been having problems sending some files - which is how they get converted to MP3 format - and the support from the customer service team is very slow (2-5 day delay in responses) and they seem to not be able to track their previous requests to me (as they just keep asking me to do the same things over and over again.) They are polite and are trying - but clearly the process is broken and there does not appear to be any way to contact them except e-mail. Buyer beware if you have problems!

There was a temporary problem on our server with converting files to MP3.
Just try to resend the same files.

I would love to see you add a function to record telephone conversations. I tried it and it will record my voice (of course) but not the other person.
Sure there are some technical 'legal' issues with this, but it would be a great function!!!!

We would like to add this feature, but for now it is not possible because of technical reasons.

I find your product confusing. I thought it was free provided yuou are not trying to email recorded messages. Now, however, there appears to be a charge for the product period. Will you please clear this up.

There was a free version 1.x. Then we released version 2.x with more functionality, it is commercial. It was our oversight that we haven't made any official statement of this event, that's why many people are confused

VR+ works on Blackberry devices with 4.2 OS only.
If you upgrade your Blackberry OS to 4.2, you can use VR+.
CAUTION: do not try to install VR+ or any app built for 4.2 OS to BB with 4.1 or 4.0 OS. This may damage your Blackberry.

Has VR+ recently been upgraded to work with the 8700-series devices? Even with OS v4.2.x, there are issues with VR+ 2.1.2 has issues with 8700-series devices (e.g., the application menu is not accessible).

This may be a dumb question as I haven't had the chance to download the program yet. Does the program save the audio to internal memory or to a microSD card? I want to record a meeting in person and wonder if there is a size/time limitation. I have a 2gb microSD card installed. I will probably be in the meeting for an hour. Would I be able to record that much?
I'm using an 8310 Curve.

You can save to the SD card, no problem. With a 2GB card an hours worth of audio would would fit easily.
I have an 8310 as well. VR+ picks up sound so good that placing it on a table in a meeting picks up all the voices. It's great.

As the application was designed for trackball devices, there could be some problems with 8700.

I can say I'm not impressed with Shape as a company either. I beta test software whenever I can, I use very little of what I test when the testing is over, however I am accustomed to receiving a copy of the final release, a discount for purchase, or at least an extended trial. After the beta round with vr+ I got a "Thank you, please buy our software." That's about the same as a kick in the shifter. I don't see a need for this program in my line of work, but a little sign of appreciation other than thanks might have brought me back when an app I can use is developed.
It's God's job to forgive Bin Laden, it's our job to arrange the meeting.

Mobihand has just notified me that a new version of VR+, 2.2.0, is just out. But I can't find a change log anywhere at mobihand or shapeservices.com. Could some from SHAPE point me to it?

Ditto. I'm assuming the only thing new about the new release is the online storage.
Which is quite cool! Way to keep VR+ still relevant in the face of the oncoming 4.31 OS's voice recording capabilities.
I just think they could use shorter URLs, though. WAY shorter URLs. If TinyURL.com can get away with tiny URLs, so should VR+.

I already did that more than two weeks ago, but I have not heard back from anyone since the initial acknowledgment (i.e., "This situation requires a bit more time for investigation. I have forwarded your letter to our developers. We will inform you about results as soon as possible.").

Victoria - I have now upgraded my Cingular 8700 to use Desktop Manager 4.2.1.6, however I seem to be unable to install VR+. When browsing to wap.shapeservices.com on the bb it does not list VR+. I am guessing this auto filters to only show software that is available for the device? Also tried downloading the software to install over Application Loader, but it also will not install as it says there is no software for my device. Is there something with the software that says it is 8800 only and won't install on a 8700 using 4.2?
Thanks,

No, it will work on an 8700, you need to update your hand held os to 4.2. Just using the 4.2 desktop manager wont do it. try this link and follow the dirs in the first post like your BB's life depended on it.

Second question. I have a curve 8310. I downloaded the trial version v2.2.2. I don't mind paying for it if it works.
I've set the left convenience key to launch VR+ and I set VR+ to automatically record on startup. If I start from the icon it goes into record mode straight away. If I start from the convenience key it does not (I have to hit space). Is this working as designed? It is not what I expected. I wanted a one key record capability.
Thanks.
