Default BBWeather - open tunnel failure (out of ideas to fix) - 09-01-2007, 08:20 PM

I have only posted this request after spending a week and a lot of searching in these forums to try and get BBWeather going again (unsuccessfully). I have read lots of others with simliar problems to see if I could fix it, but no luck so far:

Background:
- I had it running for a few weeks fine. Then one day, no more. I don't recall any obvious changes.
- Error Message: Error: Open Tunnel - Failure

The phone, setup, and app status:
- Pearl, unlocked Tmobile running on ATT. Only have BIS, not BES
- I have a Blackberry unlimited BIS plan
- WAP browser, email etc all work fine.
- Google maps works fine. I have one more app: Tellme by mobile which also reports no connection (this used to work as well)
- BBWeather:- have serveral cities setup, I have checked 'MDS proxy is disable'

APN Details: (case is as entered, have also checked for typos)
APN: wap.cingular
Username: [email address]
Password for APN: CINGULAR1

What I have tried:
- Reentering APN details (according to what popular opinion has the cingular APN to be)
- Deleted all service books and resent service books to phone
- Checked I have the service book IPPP for 5 click (whatever that does) (also have IPPP for BIBs [whatever that does)]
- Reregistered phone by going into Host Routing Table and saying register
- reloading V0.74 BBWeather OTA from sourceforge (then reboot)
- removed battery and rebooted

Questions:
- what else should I try?
- How can I debug this - how can I tell if it is an APN problem or otherwise?
- Is there any simple app that will check if the APN is setup or not?
- [just for my education - how can I understand more about the service books and what each one means?]

It sounds like a TCP problem. Your apn settings appear correct. It may be a problem on AT&T's side. You may have to call them.

Shot in the dark.... Could this be firewall? Perhaps firewall accidently enabled?

Thanks.
Any suggestions how to phrase this to them e.g. " I have a TCP problem" - what are the key words that are going to make this a shorter call?

(and I aren't aware of any firewall on this device to turn it on... just checked couldn't see anything like this in settings or advanced)

options > security options > firewall

Like I said, shot in the dark. If it is enabled, try turning it off.

thanks for the pointer - hadn't got there in my exploration of BBs. However, I can't turn it off. I can just increase the amount of things that are allowed. There wasn't much I could do.

So on the firewall, status is enabled, and you can't disable? And when you say you can only increase the things that are allowed, you are talking about the "block incoming messages" section?

Try this. Go to Options >Security Options >Application Permissions. Highlight BBWeather and click the menu key and select Edit Permissions. Then click the menu key and select "reset firewall prompts." Save settings and then go try BBWeather again. When it opens it should ask you to allow access....check the box for all connections and allow.

Unfortunately, same result. I'll ring ATT tomorrow. John, - what keywords will the average support person understand here - if you start this with 3rd party apps... they generally say they don't support / blame them...

Just tell them you can't get any apps working through TCP with the apn settings. Not sure what other "buz words" to use.

OK, all fixed by ATT Mobility. Took 30mins of my life away, but good to have the apps going.

Amusingly (?), the support person I worked with said:
- the BIS unlimited plan I was on wasn't allowed to have media net access, only blackberry browser / email, but not media net. Hence for a while he was saying, 'not working, all is normal'. ANd he was not only sure he was right on this, when asked how sure he was, he said 120%. However with some more discussion, and complete new re provisioning, when things started working again, he didn't bother with this line (I think he meant BB couldn't access Media Mall [fine]).
- I was on a $35 BIS unlimited plan and I was on the wrong one. He was partly right here - while he couldn't explain the difference, I should have been on a $30 BIS unlimited plan

Thanks for all the help.
