Profile Switching Application Now Available For Purchase -
09-05-2007, 01:12 AM
Hi all,
I've made some significant updates/fixes to the BlackBerry Profiles Scheduler and have made v1.3 available now.
Try it now for 7 days!
Get it here, via OTA download, or Desktop Manager download:
BlackBerry Profile Switcher
If you're ready to buy it, it's available at Handango.
BlackBerry Profile Scheduler - Handango Blackberry Software
Or at my own site below, via PayPal.
Version 1.3
Get it here, via OTA download, or Desktop Manager download:
BlackBerry Profile Switcher
What can the program do? - Create "rules" to control which Profile is active. You select the Profile, the days and the duration of the rule.
- Assign a profile Profile to a Calendar event. The rule will automatically adjust if the time of the Calendar event is changed. Likewise, the rule will delete itself if the calendar event is deleted.
- Allow "nested" profiles. You can create a rule that spans the whole day if you like, and when a rule ends, it will switch back to the rule that spans the whole day.
There are a few things you need to be aware of as you try out the program. - The program is currently tested on a large number of BlackBerry devices on OS 4.1 and 4.2.
- The program requires that keystroke injection be allowed for the application. (Instructions on how to do this are in the application.). NOTE : If you are on a BES, you may have to ask your BES administrators for permission to enable keystroke injection.
- The profile will not switch when the BlackBerry is holstered or the keyboard is locked. You will be notified by an audible alert if this condition occurs, and immediately upon unlocking, or unholstering, the profile will switch.
- Cannot work with custom profiles (coming soon!)
Here are some program screenshots:
The icon on the main screen.
The program's splash screen.
The main interface in inactive mode.
The main interface in active mode.
Creating a new rule.
A typical rule.
A profile change in action.
The main menu to add rules, etc.
The calendar interface.
Assigning a profile to a calendar entry.
After the rule is saved.
How the rule displays in the main application.
How to change current rules.
Bet you're now wondering "Where can I get it!?!?!".
If you're ready to buy it, it's available at Handango.
BlackBerry Profile Scheduler - Handango Blackberry Software
Or at my own site below, via PayPal.
Version 1.3
Get it here, via OTA download, or Desktop Manager download:

Please let me know what you think.
Sincerely,

Here's a question - if it can't change profiles while the keyboard is locked, how would it work, say, when wanting it to switch profiles in the morning, after it's been sitting for hours (and has auto-locked)? Any way to set it to interject keystrokes during certain hours to prevent auto-locking? I'd love to be able to tell it to not auto-lock between 10pm and 8am, and just hope that if I ever lose it, it'll be during the day.

I can't choose 'allow' for keystroke injection. 'Deny' is the only choice. Any chance that's an I/T policy since I'm on a BES?

Most definitely -- this is a showstopper that will not allow most BES users access to this application.

Looks promising, but I can see 2 showstoppers:
1) keystroke injection. As mentioned before, many BES IT policies disallow that.
2) does not work when holstered or locked. That is the normal state for most BB most of the time. If I have to take my BB out of holster before a meeting, I might as well change the profile myself.

I have to disagree with you here. For myself, and especially my wife(!!), we need something that allows us to set what Nokia phones call a "timed profile". The idea is that at the start of the meeting, you set the phone on silent for, say, 90 minutes. After that time, the phone should return to its normal profile. My wife regularly forgets to take her phone off silent, and is basically inaccessible for the rest of the day after her meeting because she doesn't hear her phone ring.
I'm very disappointed that I won't be able to use this application. If the developer figures out a workaround to the BES security issue, I'm all over it!

It appears that this app does not necessarily work that way. The fact that the profile won't change (after your 90 minutes is up) if the device is holstered, makes it useless for a large majority of users.

Not working on a 8700g -
09-05-2007, 05:59 PM
Just installed it and an error said "“Error starting BBProfiles: Error loading module 0BBProfiles’ OutOfMemoryError"
I hope this get worked out because this is a must app, of course I agree with the whole on holster or locked issue.

Did that with me twice this morning using AT&T browser, I then used the Blackberry browser through my BES and it downloaded. Not sure what that means...

Hmmm...usually when I've seen that message it was a bad file, so I'm not sure how I was able to download it. However, it doesn't do me any good because I'm on a BES and evidently it won't work. I can't get pass the setup notification screen.

Here's a potentially interesting datapoint...
I was able to successfully download the app to my 8800, but sadly, the security settings on my company's BES don't allow keystroke injection, so the app won't work. But since the app did download, maybe it's meaningful that my 8800 is on app version 4.2.1.72.
My wife's 8100 is on a BIS, so presumably she won't have the security issue, but the download gives the COD error/can't unzip error. She's on app version 4.2.0.69.
Can anyone else who is having trouble with the download confirm which app version you've got?

With the next release (hopefully before the end of the weekend), I'll have included a link to download the Desktop Manager installable version.
There will also be a few bug fixes.
- Better support for profile changes when taking the BlackBerry out of the holster of just after an auto-off/on event.
- Fix for the exception when trying to assign a profile to a calendar event that has not yet been saved.

A number of users have asked their BES administrators to change that security setting with success. Apparently many BES admins didn't even know this was restricted by default.
As for your wife's BB, I should have a new release out this weekend (hopefully), that will also include a Desktop Manager installable version.

As soon as you unlock the BB, the profile will switch to the currently active one. As for injecting keystrokes to keep the BB from auto-locking; I don't think that's a good idea, after all, it defeats the purpose of auto-locking, no? Aside from that, thwarting a desired security setting is not something I want to do.

Something I found that needs looking at. I am a college student and have my classes in my calendar as recurring events, but when I try to assign the events a custom profile it says that the event must occur in the future. I am assuming this is happening because there are events in the series that have happened in the past, but is there anyway around this? Thanks!
