i have a 7290, and have downloaded and installed the latest 4.0.029 desktop software... but how do you upgrade the actual operating system software on the handheld itself? and how do you know what version you are presently running? OS 2.1 higher or lower?

and is a 7290 the same as "BlackBerry form factors 850, 950, 857, and 957"??? becasue I saw some operating software upgrade called 2.7a for these devices...??

you guys are great though,, have fully got my BB up and running while away from the office and our tech support!!

Several questions - this is a bit confusing. Options / About will show you the version.

The 7290 is NOT the same as 850, 857, 950 and 957. They run a different OS.

V2.1 refers to the OLD BlackBerrys (850, 950, ...). Software written for v2.1 (old BBs) will NOT run on your 7290.

The older BBs are written in C++; the latest version is 2.7a.

The newer BBs are written in J2ME and use version 3.6 or higher; 4.0 is the latest.

So how do you upgrade or reinstall the actual operating system software on the handheld itself please? I have a minor glitch in my 7290 in that it freezes once I have input the code after switching on either manually or with auto on/off and would like to try a reinstall.

Probably a bad place to start a new thread, but anyhow...

If you want to try a reinstall, do the following:

Back up your BlackBerry
Download the latest version of the Handheld OS from your carrier
Get a copy of Javaloader (it is on this forum somewhere), download and unzip it. It is a DOS program. Open a DOS window and type

javaloader -usb wipe

That will completely wipe out your BB.

Locate "Vendor.XML" on your C: drive and delete it.

Restart Desktop Manager; the reinstall process should start automatically.

After it is done, restore the data from the first step.

My carrier is O2 and there isn't an os on its site for the 7290, only for the 7230. Any ideas how to get an appropriate os?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7100/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/1.1)

I finally found my version number. Do you guys by chance know if I choose to leave my redirector software up and running, will that send data to me Blackberry unit?

Guys - when you post new questions into an existing thread, they can get lost. If you have a new question, start a new thread! There's a far greater chance of you getting an answer....

Having said that, if you choose to use the redirector, which is one of several methods of pushing your e-mail to your BlackBerry, then you must leave it up and running 24X7. Redirector should be your last choice.

Download the code from Cingular. Deleting the Vendor.XML file will remove the inability to install it via Application Loader.
