If you haven't already, you need to install the newer Blackberry Desktop Manager.

Or any Blackberry desktop Manager. It (software installation) will have your computer increase the voltage to the USB and start charging you device.

bb desktop manager has to be V4.2 or later, anything before that wont work, it will give you the the error msg saying voltage not sufficient or something like that.

I use a MacBook, and it has to be plugged in to AC power in order to charge my 8830 via USB. Just another potential scenario. And I may be the only person experiencing this problem. I don't need the USB for charging, so I haven't even looked into this.

Hmmm, my 8820 charges perfectly with an old computer at the office that had the DM from a very old Nextel Blackberry 7520, years old and it works perfectly!

glad to hear that, i guess its different then. i have come across with many 4.2 hh sw bbs, every single one of them come up with that msg when hooked up to desktop manager version lower than v4.2.
