OK so I'm using something called Magic DVD Ripper to rip DVDs to play movies on my BB 8830 -- I tried 'em both in AVI and WMV with the following settings:

Video type : WMV
Frame rate : Original
Volume : Original

WMV Profile : Internal
Resolution : 320X240 (Wide Screen)
: 320X240 (Full Screen)

Video Bitrate : 1200 Kbps
Audio Bitrate : 96 Kbps
Video Codec : WMV 9 Video Codec
Audio Codec : WMV 9 Audio Code

"An error has occured attempting to play media"

Help please -- thanks a lot.

I've seen my boy watching several movies on his curve.

Ill have to see what he uses.

Once you've converted the movies to AVI or WMV have you tried putting them on your card using roxio? That's the only way I can get movies to play on my 8830.

Do u just use roxio to put it in the folder on the card? Because this is what I had to do when I 1st got my pearl and I was trying to put tunes on my card.

But I just used windows to throw em on it. No fancy programs.

I do the same thing for my PSP also.

Just checked the FAQ's -- good stuff.

I've been using Windows to transfer to my media card -- no dice. I'm trying with Roxio now -- will let y'all know if it works. Thanks

you can also use mobiola studio to convert them to the right format. wmv or avi won't play on the BB.

I came in on the tail end of this one, but how do I play movies or videos on my 8830? I see that it won't play wmv's when I'm online, but how do I send a movie to it?

It's stepwise. First you gotta get ripping software -- Magic DVD Ripper is what I use. Use that to rip and compress the DVD movie into your PC in either WMV or AVI. Then open Roxio (that's what I use anyway) in your BB Desktop application and use that to convert and store the movie into your memory card on your BB.

I don't use the same software as you - I use ImToo. But here are the settings that work just fine and you can copy the resulting file directly to the video folder on your 8830 card - note this is an mp4, not a wmv:

Video:
Video size = 320x240
Bitrate = 300
Frame rate - 24
codec - mpeg4

Audio:
Bit rate = 80
Sample rate = 44100
Channels = 2

I guess I need to buy a memory card and then get to work. I have Roxio on my pc so that will work for me.

with other software packages (Blackberry Video Converter) i can get that down to between 250 and 300mb with ease, and if i really wanted to, down to about 200mb.

You have to use BB Desktop Manager>Media Manager to convert the video into the right format and put it into your microSD card.

You cannot simply convert it and drag and drop it to your microSD card using Windows. This will not work.

No you dont. you can use many many different third party apps to convert. BB Video Converter has worked fine for me every time I have used it. What settings are you using to convert the video?

You're a gentleman and a scholar! Juno is now on my phone! Haha were both playing movies with a common actor. This mediacell even gives an example of how it will look on the phone! The original size was 700mb now its only 136mb. Superb software!!
