Software For BlackBerry 8310 (TM)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.2.332 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.2.2.332
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.2.2.181
Software Platform: 2.5.0.35
File name: 8310M_PBr4.2.2_rel332_PL2.5.0.35_A4.2.2.181_SunCom.exe
File size: 78.6MB

Download link: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=E1E32E235EEE1F970470A3A6658DFDD5

This OS can be installed on ANY 8310 regardless of brand.

Installation Instructions

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads

Note: Desktop Manager 4.3 still has some issues. Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2 is recommended but 4.3 can be used if desired.

2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.

3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader

4. Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

Is this with the new functions, video, etc?

I highly doubt it ... however, it's worth a shot trying and seeing how the OS is in general, I'd say.

I don't have a Curve on hand to test at the moment, though ... any brave souls want to give it a shot?

The name of a regional wireless carrier in the South East US and Caribbean; at least until their deal with T-Mobile closes and they become T-Mobile.

Who's Rogers, anyway ;-)

Stuck thread....

I did add one note to the first post. Desktop Manager 4.3 is very buggy even though it's now an official release. Personally, I don't recommend it. DM 4.2 SP2 works great and will even work with the 4.3 devices.

I have stopped doing minor OS upgrades. My 8800 didn't like them. My 8310 is fine until 4.3 comes.

I bought a new 8310 on Saturday, loaded this OS on it immediately since it was a clean device and though I can't say I used the 8310 with the 170, I have been using 181 now for the past 2 days with no issues whatsoever. Standard use, setup the device, loaded about a dozen or so programs on it and no error messages or anything.

I will say, I have seen posts of poor battery life on the 8310 and I have to admit I have seen very good battery life with this device. It may or may not be this OS, but battery life is not too far off my previous 8800. I took it off the charger this morning at 4am, used it on the plane for about an hour playing, landed and used Mapquest Navigator for about 30 minutes, probably had about an actual hour and a half or more of talk time, a dozen emails, few text messages, some misc calendar use and am now showing 55% left at after 6pm.

On memory, I do know when I looked after first turning on the 8310 after purchasing it, it showed just over 20mb of free storage, after loading this version, before starting to load anything, I showed just over 22mb.

Hope this helps folks, but so far so good on my device, I will be sticking with this one until 4.3 comes out I believe.

Cheers

I have had an 8310 from ATT for about a month. It came with a tools cd that my Mac won't read. I have done a ton of searches but I am not very good at this. can someone tell me or give me a link to download a desktop manager for my Mac. I did download Pocketmac for Blackberry but I don't think that is what I am looking for. Anybody

dunk,
Sorry, there is no Desktop Manager for Mac. PocketMac is all there is. There is another sync option called MissingSync but it still won't do what Desktop Manager does. You'll need to borrow a friends PC if you can't load into Parallels or BootCamp.

It's getting to hard to keep up with all the new OS's to have a pre-edited .alx file for every OS. We wrote a FAQ for it. Here's how to do it:

8310 folks - the same OS was released for the 8320, so looking for some feedback from y'all 8310 folks. How has it been running, any spontaneous reboots or other nefarious behaviour that you've had/noticed/found? Any issues with any applications and their data connectivity and so on?

I see a few reports of generic "all is OK" which is good, fishing for anyone who's had problems as well. Let us know how it's going...

Hey,

I have a 8310 I bought unlocked online. I am using Unicel which is a GSM provider in my area... I am having issues with the phone not being able to run because it doesn't have the correct service books. I know the phone was unlocked from ATT which makes me wonder if this is why. I tryed the OS install on this forum and it did no good to help me. Can I reflash the OS to a standard Blackberry? Is there some way I can program the Blackberry so it will work with my provider???

HELP!! I am new at this phone thing...

Thanks

welcome to the forums. have the carrier resend you the service books. those are provided by the carrier via the SIM card in this case.

John Clark
03-24-2008, 09:18 PM
What is not working? With Unicel you will not get any blackberry services. You can enter Unicel's apn into the TCP settings and get Opera Mini to work, but that's about it.

I have Unicel on a couple of unlocked Pearls but there is no BB service since Unicel doesn't offer Blackberry Data plans. Unicel can't push service books to your device like other carriers (with bb data plans) can.

jd101506
03-24-2008, 09:21 PM
well I did enter the apn, and Opera Mini won't even work....

Nothing works. lol

They don't require a user or pass so it's completely open source.

My internet isn't working, my email is trying to access through enterprise server but I can't receive anything from them... I have yet to receive the SMS or MMS message that has any of the service books I sent... Any suggestions?

John Clark
03-24-2008, 09:23 PM
You can't get any email using Unicel. You can use the gmail app if you have gmail but you can do nothing with BES/BIS for email. I have gotten Opera and the gmail app working on my Unicel accounts but that's it.

Under TCP make sure you have the following:

apn:apn.unicel.com
Username
Password

leave username and password blank.

Again, you will not get any Blackberry service with this, though. If you need to connect to your BES then you need another service like AT&T or TMobile, etc.

Sith_Apprentice
03-24-2008, 09:24 PM
if you dont have a BB enterprise plan, your BB wont do anything on push email or BES. your internet will only work via a third party app, like opera. SMS should work, as its voice, and MMS wont work without SOME kind of data plan

jd101506
03-24-2008, 09:25 PM
Well is it possible to get yahoo go??

All I really need is that app because it can look up all the stuff I need online. Opera Mini wouldn't be bad either. Is there some settings I need to put in place??

I have unlimited data streaming and texting on Unicel by the way!

John Clark
03-24-2008, 09:28 PM
You can't download applications OTA (over-the-air) so it will be difficult to load Yahoo Go. In order to download OTA you need the OEM browser and without a BB data plan you won't ever get one. You can install it using Desktop Manager if you have the .cod's and .alx files for it.

I just gave you the settings you'll need for TCP data (gprs/edge data) on Unicel. That's all you can do.

I've had BB's on Unicel for quite some time. Believe me, if there was anything more you could do, I'd have done it.

jd101506
03-24-2008, 09:40 PM
Alright

So there really isn't a way to open the Curve up to the full potential on Unicel...

I'm thinking about ditching it for something that I can actually use on the network... This is ridiculous to have a high end smartphone and lacking the network support for it.

There isn't a way to reflash the OS?

Like, so it will detect and I can run the regular browser??

I know this was already covered I'm sure... I'm a Noob.

-JD

John Clark
03-24-2008, 09:43 PM
I've already covered it here for you! There is NO way to get an OEM browser with the device on Unicel. Unicel does NOT offer Blackberry service.

As I said, I've successfully gotten the Gmail app to work and Opera Mini to work. That is all. No OEM browser. No push email. Can't be done until Unicel offers the BB data plan. I can't make this any more straight forward.

jd101506
03-24-2008, 09:49 PM
One more question for you.

sick of me yet?

Would a Iphone's capability work on Unicel? Any other smart phones that will work as a alternative the the Blackberry???

I heard that a unlocked iPhone will work on the Unicel service, and will have all the features working. Is that true?

Thanks

John Clark
03-24-2008, 10:06 PM
I think so, with exception of the Visual voice mail.

jd101506
03-24-2008, 10:09 PM
Alright.

Well I guess I may have to look into other phone alternatives if I stick with Unicel. Kind of have to because its about the only GSM provider in my area. Do you have any phone alternative suggestions?? iPhone? HTC?

Thanks for all your help.

John Clark

One more bit of Unicel info. Verizon purchased Unicel last year with plans to switch everyone back to CDMA this spring. I haven't heard any more about it for a while but that's supposed to be the process. You may be forced into CDMA anyway.

jd101506
03-24-2008, 10:19 PM
Yeah.

I talked to Unicel today actually. I asked them about the Curve and about Verizon buying them. Apparently, *from what the Unicel guy told me* Verizon is buying Unicel, but selling out the towers to Cingular/ATT. They are planning on keeping the GSM towers open in VT at least. Thats what he told me. I am hoping he's correct... I really don't want to deal with phone switching again... lol

-JD

John Clark
03-24-2008, 10:21 PM
Yeah, I believe that's for roaming partners, though. So, Unicel users will likely have to switch back to a CDMA device. As far as selling out to Cingular, that could hurt me as a TMobile user. We roam on Unicel in our area and that could kill the TMobile BB for us if Cingular doesn't let us roam. I sure hope not.

jd101506
03-24-2008, 10:26 PM
Ahhh

CDMA is so awful. I switched from Verizon to get away from it. I think GSM sounds better then CDMA plus, you can use almost all GSM phones anywhere in the world. I believe you were right about the roaming thing also. I really didn't like Verizon service when I used it. Oh well.

Thanks for the help!
