My trackball will scroll without any problems, but when I push down it does not open the item. I have to use the enter key. I have taken the battery out several times and put it back but the trackball refuses to open anything. Again it does move flawless in any direction.
Thoughts?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8700g: BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Try putting the device in standby mode and then pressing the trackball down hard, and then move it around in several directions while pressing it down hard. Then take the device out of standby and try it again.

I did try that no luck, but I tried again anyway, still no luck.

After that go with compressed air; might be some dust bunnies blocking the push action of the trackball.

I noticed yesterday that the trackball in my co-worker's 8830 had a much more distinctive click to it than mine. My trackball feels somewhat mushy compared to his. I would advise you to return your 8830 to your dealer and get a replacement.

Try my guide.
How to clean you Blackberry trackball (http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-8100-series-discussion-pearl/108122-how-clean-you-blackberry-trackball-pic-guide.html)

But stop at step "4". And instead of disassembling the trackball, try to look for any corrosion on the device motherboard.
And try to pull the "spoon look-alike" a bit out. (don’t no the name of it:-( sorry)

you can also try to press down the motherboard button with a plastic object, to check if it is the scroll that cant reach down to the button, or if the motherboard has a defect.

Here's another option. I had a user that had the very same problem (trackball moved in any direction just wouldn't select). We were going to get a replacement, figuring it was a HW problem. I decided to try one more thing. I ran JLCmdr (javaloader) and wiped the BB completely, then reinstalled OS and necessary software. Trackball works like a champ now. No disassembly required, unless you just want to take things apart.

never tried that. but i would say about 70% of all blackberrys i have fixed has a HW problem, when there is a trackball problem.

try JLCmdr first ;) but disassembling is not just for fun!!

I tried everything except the wipe. I would like to use JLCmdr as suggested, but I do not know the procedure. If I backup will my e-mail settings be saved? It took me a week to get those right and I would hate to loose the settings. So, can someone walk me through the wipe?

The problem was related to what the Sprint store said was water damage. I do not recall any water on the device. I was also confused why the phone worked flawless and even the trackball with the exception of the select. Anyhow they took the phone apart and showed me a little spot under the track ball that was discolored and said it was water damage and I was out of luck. Interesting after they gave me the phone back it stopped working about 1 hour later. I had insurance and they sent me a replacement overnight and now life is back to normal.
