So BIS has a file size limit on email attachments sent to the handheld - FINE.
So is there a way to set up a filter/email rule in BIS so when clients send me emails with large email attachments they don't get a Mail Delivery Subsystem error?

We've all seen 'em, hate 'em.

So basically set up a filter so BIS DOES NOT EVEN TRY to send the huge email to my handheld and more importantly my clients don't get a cheesy mail box error. That's so like, 1999. C'mon.

Thanks!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8700g: BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

I don't think there is a filer for attachment size. That would be nice, though.

Sorry...so what is the attachment size limit?

Interesting..... I've yet to encounter such an error. Maybe the reason is I've never forwarded anything to my blackberry or a colleague's that is too big, but I don't know.

But this filter question came up earlier today. So far I haven't seen anyone say a way to do it.

EDIT. the other thread: http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-blackberry-discussion/110009-stripping-attachments.html#post778007

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the limit is 5MB. That means any message over 5MB will not reach RIM's servers- that means neither the original message body nor attachment will get to the handheld.

RIM Error message example (to the recipient):
PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 16): 552 #5.3.4 message size exceeds limit

Could the size limit be a function of the carrier, and not RIM?

I think it's a filter set at RIM before the email hits RIM's email servers.

Crap! It's 8MB. That's pretty decent size to say the least.

Here's an interesting BlackBerry KBase / support.com article

"The 850/950 and 857/957 devices have an attachment size limit of 32 KB. Other BlackBerry devices have no attachment size limit."

I was doing a little searching here on BBF and was sort of coming to the conclusion that on BIS the limit is set by RIM, as you say, but on BES it's unlimited (default) unless a limit is set by admin (http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-blackberry-discussion/68094-blackberry-email-size-limit.html#post473413). Don't rely on that.... just result of a too-quick scan.

The filter question aside, I think the limit is above what you would be able to work with reasonably on the blackberry. But it is handy to have so you can at least receive the email and then forward to an account you can then use to open the attachment on a computer. This was actually the case for me recently when email from a contact was bouncing when he sent to my office account, but I was able to receive on the trusty blackberry and forward to my office account.

Yahoo limit is 10 meg - the 3meg overhead. Gmail is 20 meg
Rim does not limit forwarded attachments but most carriers and email providers do.
There are some services that will take large files and break them up to beat the limit. Some send multiple emails other use different methods.
