Home Screen Indicator

On my 8830, I have a home screen indicator that is not listed in the manual. It's tough to explain, but it looks like a white envelope with a small red star with some type of small red box on the lower left hand corner of the envelope. There is a number to the left of the envelope. What does this indicator tell me?
