I am looking at buying a blackberry off craigslist that has a missing trackball. He said that he dropped it and the trackball popped out, everything else is still functioning. A picture of the unit is posted below. I was wondering if I could just order another trackball off this site pop it in, and it would work. cnn.cn

From tutorials of people cleaning their trackballs It doesn't look like a very hard task to do. Is it hard, and will it most likely work?

Should work with no problem.

Need to find out if the model for sale needs the metal retaining ring!

No, no retaining ring necessary. However, keep in mind you have no idea if the device works even with a trackball in it. It powers on but it could have other problems, i.e. water, or other damage or problems.

humm, is there anyway to test again defects?

If it is just the trackball then I could make a few hundred off it.

Since buying from craigslist I assume the sale is local inspect it for other damages first most notably liquid damage. Maybe even get a trackball first they are cheap a pop it in to test before actually purchasing the device

That statement concerns me. I hope your not indicating that you are going to purchase this, insert a trackball in it and then resell it to some unsuspecting person. People on this forum are very quality control oriented and no one would assist you or offer you advice if this is your intent.

I am hoping you are seeking advice on a device that you are intending on purchasing, repairing and keeping as your own personal device

If, indeed, that is all that's wrong with it I see no reason to be concerned with the device. The trackballs do pop out easily so I can see how this story could very well be true without much of a big drop. It's just that until you get it you won't really know if it has any other problems. I don't know that you could make "a few hundred" off of it but it's possible you could make a hundred or, maybe two. It's a gamble.

Oh wow, JC is so right. You have absolutly no idea how many phones we see at the store that were bought on eBay, kijijiji, or craigslist sold as is that have had major issues. People sell crap on these sites. Just last week somone brought an 8700 that he bought on eBay. Thing couldnt pick up any network, so like an idiot i plugged it into one of my laptops. Turns out the guy had a hardcore IT policy, and it transfered onto my two berrys. Big pain in the butt to remove. There could be water damage, there could be many problems, speaker, mic, list can go on and on. I would be careful. I usually buy stuff like that for parts (y)

Horizon Wireless is reputable. They're the ones who sponsored our Christmas Charity Drawing that just ended a couple days ago.
