I was recently trying to update the software on my 8703e to ver. 4.2. Once the update was complete the phone will no longer boot up. It gives a picture of a window w/circle and a line through it. The numbers 543 are listed underneath. I cannot get the BB to restore the OS at all. I do not know what to try from here. I am at a loss.
Apparently I should have stayed with what I had.:-(

Try this...
How do I wipe the BlackBerry using Jl Cmder? - BlackBerryFAQ.com (http://blackberryfaq.com/index.php/How_do_I_wipe_the_BlackBerry_using_Jl_Cmder%3F)
and if you must:
What to do next if Jl Cmder will not connect and wipe - BlackBerryFAQ.com (http://blackberryfaq.com/index.php/What_to_do_next_if_Jl_Cmder_will_not_connect_and_wipe)

You should be ok, don't worry.

I went ahead and followed the instructions. Now it appears to be stuck in the boot-up mode. Where the hour glass keeps spinning.

LET IT SPIN!

About 20 minutes is normal, but it could for up to an hour, one user here told me his took 1.25 hours to boot (lots of call logs and messages to restore).

Do NOT get impatient and pull the plug before a good long while.

Over an hour?!!? Wow, I tell people to be patient but I had no idea it could be that long!

Because of the large amount of messages, calender stuff, etc, a complete wipe on my 8703e (OS 4.2.1) takes close to 2 hours. yes that is 2 hours. Interestingly, it does not wipe all 3rd party apps. To do that you then have to use the Desktop Manager to get rid of the 3rd party apps. Then, a battery pull and you are really back to a clean unit. Can be very time consuming, but I have learned this the hardware. You must have faith that as long as the hourglass is flipping over, just wait. Go to sleep if necessary. Whatever you do, don't pull the power! 73
