Well, I came back from Windows Mobile for a while with my 8100

I havent had a BB in about 2 years, and last I checked it isn't possible
Have things changed since then

I have no data plan, and i dont wanna pay for a subscription (as I change my phone often).

I have a Bluetooth GPS receiver, so has a software been developed yet, or do they all still rely on constant OTA updates on the maps as you move??
Thanks

constant OTA downloads of the maps as far as i know. there is not enough space in the device memory for several hundred MB to GB of data.

I just don't understand the true concept for BB for map OTA. I know OTA map are updated when compared to those map stored on the SD. The whole app. and map data can stored on a single 2GB SD with plenty of room to spare.

From what I can understand regarding app or SW, it had to be stored on Device Memory to run. And unlike the MP3, PIC and Ringtone it only can read it on the SD but can not run it. Please correct me if my observation of BB is wrong.

I don't understand what you don't understand.

Rumor has it that SD card map storage is being worked on by one or more of the mapping providers.

Well....
If you just quoted the first sentence, then you will not understand BUT if you quoted both paragraph which followed my explanation.

Welp, atleast John Clark understand.
Eventhough it just a rumor atleast better then nothing.

I just don't like having Apps/SW to be installed on the Device when you can put it on the SD / Media Card instead. You will be limited to the Device Memory while your Media / SD have plenty of room. And beside, you don't get the whole 64mb.

Maybe I am so used to the other device like the Axim (from DELL) that I am maybe having trouble of seeing or comparing the advantage of my BB.

My main complaint are - Why can't Apps / SW be installed on the SD and also be accessing it. Any other devices can but why not BB?

you can download google maps to your sd card, and then run GMaps without internet connection
use this site to mark area you want to storage:
Map Creation Tool for MGMaps (http://www.mgmaps.com/create/)
then download this program to your pc, to get maps:
http://www.mgmaps.com/cache/gMapMaker-setup.exe
and then install Mobile GMaps form here(there is a version dedicated for BB):
Mobile GMaps - Download (http://www.mgmaps.com/download.php)

and enjoy gps maps from sd card :D

However, executables can access data on memory card.

Solution: Put executable (less than 1 megabyte) in main BlackBerry memory, while putting map data (gigabytes) on the memory card. Instead of using a small temporary map cache in main memory, use a large permanent map cache on the memory card instead (holding entire North America) and sell this data at $100 per year.

<put evil smiley here>

and this is how you can profit for your own benefit from the blackberry franchise ;)

Ok, that still good but still limited of what you can install onto the BB. And thank for the tip about selling those data for the $100. Maybe I can get something out of this.;-)

Back to SD. I noticed accessing a video file, it is not as fast? Is this true? Meaning, when I watch a video clip on the BB, it having trouble syncing the video with the audio. At first, I thought it was just the conversion process that maybe the cause of it. But when transfer back to the PC, it played just fine. So what I am assuming is, the SD is abit slower of reading a large file? The reason I use Video as an example because I don't really know yet about how good if data map can be retrieve on the SD.

Currently I don't know of any good map vendor like MQ and TeleNav to be installed onto the SD and no OTA. OTA have problem at certain area that do not have service but your signal (EDGE) is good. I brought this example up because of a case that had happen from Google Map, Yahoo and BBmap. I tried to find direction from Moraga California (St Mary's College compus) to a distination and my BB indicating there no service to download the direction I request. I looked at my BB for signal bar and EDGE, it all there and strong but no service from the map data server. As soon as I got out of the campus and tried again, it work just fine. I am curious if there any Map vendor out that do not have OTA for BB but can be installed to the SD.
