I have downloaded Chinese version of the Blackberry 8820 software from the following site.

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=EEFC9E10EBDC4A2333B42B2DBB8F27B6

There's the CJK.alx files in the directory "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8820-v4.2.2.184_P2.5.0.40", which has Chinese, Japanes and Korean settings.

1. Since I don't need Chinese or Japanese, I've created the new korean.alx file and the content looks like the following.

<loader version="1.0">
<!-- Language and input support -->
<application id="net.rim.blackberry.lang.ko.rendering">
<name>BlackBerry Korean Characters and Font Support</name>
<description>Korean Characters and Font Support for BlackBerry handhelds.</description>
<version>%_appsVersion:V02%</version>
<vendor>Research In Motion</vendor>
<copyright>Copyright 1998-2007 Research In Motion</copyright>
<fileset Java="1.0">
<directory>Java</directory>
<files>
net_rim_font_korean.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_transcoding_data_EUC_KR.cod
net_rim_tid_dynamic_transcoding_data_x_Johab.cod
</files>
</fileset>
</application>
</loader>

2. Copy the new Korean.alx to (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8830-v4.2.2.176_P3.0.0.79) on your hard drive.

3. Copy net_rim_font_korean.cod, net_rim_tid_dynamic_transcoding_data_EUC_KR.cod and net_rim_tid_dynamic_transcoding_data_x_Johab.cod to (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8830-v4.2.2.176_P3.0.0.79\Java) on your hard drive
4. Connect your Blackberry 8830 or Curve to your computer.
5. Run App Loader
7. Click on Korean Characters and Font Suppot in the list of programs
8. Click on Next
9. Click on Finished

It worked. Thanks ckwkim.

According to Rim newer version of handheld software (8320M_PBr4.2.2_rel338_PL2.5.0.40_A4.2.2.184_RIM) doesn't have language option under application loader. So I'll have to keep my old one (T-Mobile_BlackBerry_8320_v4.2.2.180 to use Korean fonts. I tried newest one with newest Desktop Manager software but the newest ones doesn't have language choice option. Too bad for us, multi language users.

So my advices is "just copy these files into the old software and do not upgrade it."

I'm able to read in Korean, and, now, I just want to know how to type in Korean. Which key do I have to press to change from English to Korean? Is there a "Alt" key just like a computer keyboard? Does anyone know?

for version 4.5.0.15

follow the download link in ckwkim's post to download:

8820CJK_PBr4[1].2.2_rel338_PL2.5.0.40_A4.2.2.184_CSL.exe

extract the files mentioned in his post.

After installing 4.5.0.15 go to the dir:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\

in that dir, create another dir called "Java"

Put the 3 .cod in the Java dir but put the korean.alx file in the AppLoader dir.

Run the 4.5.0.15 app loader and "browse" to the korean.alx file.

From there it should be obvious.

For anyone still wondering out there,
3 cod files + 1 alx solution also works with Telus BB 8330 (Curve) here in Canada.

As suggested in the earlier post, just copy the files in these location:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\korean.alx
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Java\*.cod

I installed the latest OS, it's 8320EastAsia_PBr4[1].5.0_rel81_PL2.7.0.68_A4.5.0.55_Indosat to obtain Korean viewing/input.
Installation was good and I was able to type and view Korean.
But I noticed my facebook application was gone so I downloaded.
Ever since then, My message or e-mails that come in Korean are all cracked, can't read at all. However, i can still type Korean.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Today, I noticed I can read e-mail which I received in Korean yesterday. Basically, it takes a whole day for me to read them. I guess it's not an issue with facebook.
Does anyone know what's causing this problem?

for mac users...

i have a mac. what i didn't realize was that the included cd from blackberry was only for pc's -_-''. this is not an issue since i have both xp and mac osX installed but i prefer the mac environment at this time. why not choose the iphone? various reasons aside it was mostly b/c blackberry phone had a qwerty keypad...

went to apple website for blackberry download which redirected to the blackberry website ( Software Download for BlackBerry Support )
proceeded to download PocketMac v4.1

downloaded the files from hard_core's post above

connected blackberry to mac (usb cable)
installed PocketMac (took awhile)
restarted computer

opened the "PocketMac SyncManager" icon

clicked on blackberry icon
clicked on utilities>install software to device
from there selected the "korean.alx" file and setup was completed to phone

i clicked on my blackberry and instantly no problems reading korean emails

thanks ckwkim, hard_core for the posted help (y)!!

Ah... excellent! It works! I didn't realize that I had to download all of the files above (and not just the .alx file). Also, I had to make sure to delete the .txt extension at the "file property" section. For some reason, changing the name at the desktop level did not actually change the extension name as I thought it would. I can now read Korean e-mails including yahoo.

I don't suppose there is a way to input Korean????

several members mentioned it is possible. i just upgraded my sprint 8830 to 4.5.0.101 and i can't seem to enable inputting. when i go to options/language, i don't see any option other than English in "input language". i wonder i should just give it up and be happy that i can read Korean email.

Hi, I'm a Mac user, and I'm trying to download korean.alx through pocketmac. When I clicked utilities --> install software to Device, a warning sign comes up saying, "unable to locate one or more files required by this installer".

What do I do with net_rim_tid_dynamic_transcoding_data_EUC_KR.cod, and net_rim_tid_dynamic_transcoding_data..._johad-1.cod? I know they have to be used somehow... Please help!!

just wanted to make an observation. while i am now able to input and read korean font, whenever i receive SMS text from my friends in korea (using SK Telecom) they come in as jumbled symbols. however, they are able to read my korean SMS text.

perhaps there is a compatibility issue between the 2 networks.

HOW TO INSTALL THE FONTS

* FIRST download the 4 files in previous reply... (delete the .doc)
for those who doesnt have (as me)
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8800-v4.2.1.?????"

JUST CREATE ONE

1) go to you BB, option - about
2) then create as its written in your BB, in my case (BB version and Platform version)
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8800-v4.5.0.124_p.2.7.0.92"
3) C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Loader.exe

It seems the problem with adding Korean language is solved.
Could anybody help me to add LATVIAN language to my 8820?
I need only writing (reading is allready possible with "English").
Probably a new COD and ALX files are needed.
Are any instructions/software available for creating COD files?

Well the korean languages can be installed usding the official site of the blackberry. It is easy like installing the other software on the phone.
