Confused about headphone jack requirements -- first post!

hi eeryone, just want to say that i've been reading the forums (but never posted) and u guys are super helpful (especially for us newbs). Anyways..

i've been searching for headphone jack issues, and this is what i understand so far:

1) generic converters from 3.5 mm to 2.5mm jacks (like radio shack's) don't work

Then if i dont use a converted, and buy earbuds w/ a mini stereo plug (2.5mm) will that work? i'm confused.
