I have a Pearl which I've had since I guess August of last year, love the phone. However everyone once in a while it causes a surge of panic.

You see I charge it at home on my PC. Apparently if my BlackBerry is plugged into a USB port on my PC during a reboot my PC won't get past a blinking cursor in the upper left of a black screen.

The advice to fix this usually goes like this, "remove your hard drive and mount it in another computer as a slave drive to see if you have any hope at all of recovering even the tiniest shred of your data... No just kidding, didn't mean to get your hopes up, it's all gone."

However unplug my Pearl and the PC boots right up... It has only happened a couple of times, which is why I forget, and both times it took me several minutes to realize I need to unplug my phone.

Just happened a few minutes ago and I thought I'd try to save some poor soul out there that sense of panic at seeing just a blinking cursor on a black screen.

I recently ran into that with a usb 1-tetrabyte drive. If I attempt to reboot my xp/sp2 computer the reboot stalls at a black screen if that drive is powered on (if plugged into usb but power off, no problem). I think the computer's power system is taxed with all of my other usb drives hanging off the system (even though the drive is powered and plugged into a powered usb hub).

I don't know if it really is a power issue or some "pre-check" that is occurring during reboot but clearly, I have tried to remember to turn that drive off. I've started turning off my usb dvd-write drive, too.

Has not happened with my Blackberry 8830 yet.

check in the BIOS settings, does it say check other devices for boot information? if so, then it is searching the USB drive for possible boot information. you could turn Mass Storage Mode off on the pearl and you computer should boot fine.

The PC may be set to boot from USB. A simple change if you dont need it. Or just do as suggested above.

Shouldn't be happening though. I would check over at techguy.org to see if there's advice from the pc folks. Attached peripherals shouldn't mess with the boot sequence or success. Something wrong with the IRQ's or something.

Well I'm going to look into it further and see if I can find anything.

Thanks,

Its a simple issue. Its due to the options and settings of newer BIOS that are out on the market. It is seeing your Pearl as an external drive and trying to load an OS from it. If you have a SD card that is likely the cause, you phone is setting in mass storage mode.

I would try and turn mass storage off and reboot to see if that fixes the hang. As far as it sounds this is nothing to really be worried about. I have an external drive that does that same thing to my laptop if I have it on when I boot up.

Try switching off the mass storage mode and let us know if it does it still. Check it under Options>Media Card. By default it is set to ask for setting the device into this mode.
