Does anyone out there know if it is true that if you dont have the blackberry add on option (I have T-mobile) then you can not use the calendar and address book sync????

Partly true.

If you don't have the Blackberry Data plan, you can't do a *wireless* sync of the calendar and address book.
Without the plan, you can still do a sync using a USB cable attached to your PC with Blackberry Desktop manager installed.

Hmm...that is what I tried to do, I installed the software and then plugged in the USB cable, but then I had problems sync-ing so I called T-Mobile and they said you cant sync w/o the plan, but they couldnt get me to a Blackberry specialist.

Every time I tried to sync, it would just give me an unknown error....any ideas?

What are you trying to sync to? If it is Outlook, it is possible that Intellisync is having difficulty reading your Outlook profile.
