curve keeps cutting out during phonecalls

I have been having a problem with my curve by T-mobile. Not sure how to explain it but when I am talking on the phone I keep having times where I don't hear the other person for a second or so. Almost like you would get on a landline phone when you have a call waiting except there is no call waiting. It is really annoying and I don't know what to do about it.

One explanation is that digital phone signals are either there or not. There is no fade like analog signals. So if you or the other party is in a fringe area with a low signal, it will cut in and out. Even moving around where the signal is marginal will cause it to drop in and out.
