can't backup and restore

When I had my Pearl, i had installed the desktop manager software on my xp box. I was able to connect my pearl using the usb cable and open desktop manager and backup. Now, when I connected my curve, the option to back and restore, when you click on that link, is greyed out. i reinstalled desktop manager software but still a problem. also, for some reason, it says device connected but it doesn't show the pin. with my pearl it did. what gives?

Have you installed the O.S. on your pc. Don't know if that would make a difference. Reconfigure your conection, or try a different port.

what exactly do you mean by installing OS on pc? All I have is the desktop manager software which is version 4.3, i believe. i've been connecting it via usb.i may try a different computer.
