View Full Version : Blackberry Newbie - 7290

This seems like such a friendly & helpful forum, I thought I'd take the plunge & share my inexperience with Blackberry's. Never having used one before, I'm sure my problems stem from something I'm doing wrong, rather than with the phone itself.

I bought the 7290 on ebay a few days back. Before it arrived I phoned o2 & asked them to put unlimited internet access on my pay as you go account, as I was going to use my blackberry. I was expecting it to be more complicated, as I figured the blackberry's settings & features worked a little different. But they just activated the unlimited monthly web browsing, which I was happy with. But the blackberry arrived & I can't for the life of me get it to work properly, was online the whole day yesterday trying to figure it out & the previous owner didn't ever really use it so he wasn't much help.

Firstly there is no browser icon. In the settings options, under Browser Options, well there's no actual options you can choose from either. I was pretty sure that it'd work with just my payg wap settings, as I wasn't going to use push email, but like I said, nowhere to insert these settings.

I was trying to install a browser, which I got off another site but I can't connect the blackberry to my PC as I don't have the software and also, the bluetooth does not work. If I try to enable it, it tells me that Bluetooth has been disabled by the System Administrator.

Phew. That was a mouthful. I hope I made some sense. I feel really silly, not doing proper research on it before buying it but I stumbled on it in the last 3 minutes of its auction & the gadget freak inside me got the better of me. I'm not usually so incompetant with electronics or gadgets or anything of the sort, but like I said, for some reason I've just never used a blackberry.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Hi & welcome to BBF!

The Blackberry Browser will not work for you unless you have Blackberry Internet Service Tariff with o2. This must be combined with a monthly voice contract not pay and go.

Your only option therefore is to download the Opera mini browser and install it onto the device using Desktop Manager. You will then need to enter the o2 APN settings onto the device. This is not quaranteed to work though.
Go to options>advanced options> TCP and enter them there.

Please read this:-

You can download desktop manager onto your PC from here. Go for 4.2 sp2 or 4.3.

Thanks for the link akosnitzky, I removed the IT policy.

Well Foxglove, when I phoned them up & asked if I could go online with my blackberry on pay as you go, he told me yes & that I would need to the 7.50 web browsing bolt on... I figured I wouldn't be able to use the whole push email feature but that was ok. Anyway, so my bolt on works just fine on my partners phone, but can't get it to work now on the blackberry. So you're saying that the unlimited web browsing bolt on won't work with the blackberry? If that's the case, I intend to phone them up & give them a piece of my mind... although I must say, their customer services doesn't usually give me incorrect information.

Although, I'm still thinking I might have missed something, because I suspect I might still be missing a setting or two. Anyway, thanks a bunch for the help, both of you, I will keep messing about & hopefully get to know it a little more :)

Wirelessly posted

If you can get opera mini to work then the unlimited bolt on you have bought for internet use should cover your opera mini useage.

If o2 have told you that it will work then ask them to send you the settings to enable o2 active. I tried this myself previously and was told it was not possible.

O2 customer services are not the best when it comes to Blackberries !

Let us know how you get on.

Oh man, what a hassle. Well I phoned them up again & as it turns out, the first person I spoke to last week was mistaken & the blackberry data plan is not available on pay as you go yet. As the unlimited internet browsing is still fairly new for pay as you go customers, I guess it'll still be a while for the blackberry then.

They were nice enough to pay back the 7.50 for the bolt on, onto my account, but now, instead of going back onto contract & getting a new blackberry curve, I'm gona have to wait a month or two, because that's how long it'll take me to use up my pay as you credit :D

Thanks for the friendly help Foxglove, I think I'll like this forum.
