Nextel's do not work in many countries outside of the US. Very, very few, in fact.
The Dominican Republic is not one of them...

I guess it'll work (for data) anywhere in the World IDEN w/ blackberry data is used which I know Canada has (Telus MIKE) and anywhere that regular IDEN is used for voice (I'm not sure..)

What about others like t-mobile, do you get charged roaming fees for using outside of the US?

Well that would be dependent on your plan and if they have a special "in canada" or international roaming plan thats all inclusive,,,,generally however, you will be charged roaming fees just like I am when I go into the USA or anywhere else in the world.

Pjrivera,

You'll get charged large fees for voice outside of the US. For data, you can get an unlimited plan from Cingular for US$65.

I've have luck all over Europe + Hong Kong with both data (cheap) and voice (not cheap). If you'll be anywhere for more than a week, get a local phone+SIM for voice.

GSM does not work in Japan.

If you have a non-GSM BB, you'll have problems in most places.

Question, I will be in Cancun, Mexico, at the end of October. I currently use a BB7250 on Verizon and wonder a couple of things:

1. Will I have coverage?

2. If so, what types of roaming fees will I be charged?

I will need to be able to keep in contact with home during this time and need to decide if I will be able to use my BB and if it will be cost effective or if I should go the phone card route.

Any thoughts and/or experiences?

T-Mobiles work great in Amsterdam. My boss was just there. From the T-Mobile International roaming web site for The Netherlands:

Voice rate: $0.99 per minute for all calls

Text messaging rate (per message): $0.35 sent, $0.05 received (or pulled from feature bucket)

Internet (GPRS) rate: $0.015 cents per KB in all other countries

Nextel voice works very well in a lot of countries. its the iden data that does not! check nextel.com for coverage options.

Country Phone Options1 Worldwide Rates2 (per minute in U.S. dollars) Emergency Dialing Number

Dominican Republic | v60, P280, V505, V180 | $1.99 | 911

Those are GSM phones that Nextel will give/loan/get to you when you travel out of the country. Not pertinent to the discussion of whether a Nextel BlackBerry will work outside of the US.

You should do ok in Mexico with your BB. Call your carrier for specifics.

T-Mobile is pretty much the best out there if you're planning on going outside the country and use your BB. You'll be charged $15/MB of data that you use.

I hope the link underneath would be a lot of help for you.

dkmadrid,

If you add a North America Plan, this covers all of Canada and Mexico. As for data I am sure that is another story (I will ask my data rep).

Being an International traveller based in Germany can only confirm that the BB7290's we use (Vodafone) works everywhere in the world, except of course Korea and Japan.

My only request would be a BB with 3G/UMTS enabling us to cover Japan.
Anyone knows if that is in the pipeline?

@<hidden>,

VERY interesting. Was in Japan three months ago with my 7290 but had not signal at all. Perhaps this has changed. When were you in Japan?

Nopen they don't work in Japan. I have sent many a user there. Japan is running on a 3G network.

They are currently working on a 4G network and have sucessfully made a 20 mb connection at 30MPH. Pretty cool. We can't even get good web access on our phones and they are watching tv.

A shame really. If only RIM would make a 3G unit we'd all be dancing and singing.

Would sure be on our wish list for the next BB.

No existing BlackBerrys work in Japan or Korea.

Gregg - I am not sure how your BlackBerry was working in Japan. I suspect it wasn't.
