Will be interesting to see if they've fixed the EDGE issue that is present in v4.5.0.37.

I was roaming in an EDGE area last week and often had to do a Reconcile Now to get my mail. No such prob with GPRS.

Just my experiences:
- UMA now works again
- Fixed the forward/back delay timer in the media player (previous build required a trigger finger to ensure that adjusting the volume up/down didn't cause next/previous track to play.
- Broke device lock over-ride when active media is playing; while watching a movie, device will lock after your normal inactivity timeout.
- EDGE isn't shifting from towers seemlessly. This might be related to me using Tmobile, but it is a definte change in device behavior. On a 1 hour trip between office and home in Atlanta metro area, there used to two well defined areas where calls would drop. There are now 5 of these areas.
- Google maps 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 lockup on the license screen (at 90%) when you prompted to update the device security settings.
- Browser speed is improved; but EDGE data issues (tower roaming) still cause many problems.

Location is one of the better kept secrets in the BB world it seems -- people must be taking NDA's pretty seriously this time: no trace of it on any search engines (except people begging/wishing for a link!)...

I understand the VM issue is still in release .44. You could always get a YouMail account. This works very very well.

No, but you would get a text or email from YouMail notifying you of the voicemail. You're correct, the VM indicator is from the carrier.

I've noticed a bug in 4.5.0.42, namely, if you email a photo or video from the camera app (rather than opening an email and attaching), the OS does not use the default mail account. If it's a recipient that has an account associated with it, because you've sent mail to that recipient before, it doesn't use that either. It just uses the first mail account in the list. I wonder if that is fixed in this new beta release.

Any carrier version will do, just delete the vendor.xml file before install as well documented in other threads.

All BB OS releases are model specific - the 8310 version will not work with a 8300.

I would be ok with version 4.5.42 if the battery life wasn't so bad. Only getting between 6 and 9 hours with Wifi and Bluetooth turned off. T Mobile sent me a new Battery but I get the same battery life.

So the purpose of the ending numbers to the .44 platform is ....

JSanders

...to differentiate between the "applications" release versions.

RIMs release numbering, combined with the Platform and Software numbers is more confusing than a worm wrassle.
You need a good Dewey Decimal System just to read them and understand them.

Yeah, for YouMail. I am reading the prior poster's post as saying there potentially is a way to turn on the message indicator icon (the picture of a tape reel) on the LCD vs. the red flashing light of an incoming SMS or email.

I might have misunderstood what he is saying.

Installed 4.5.44 and this is what I have noticed.

Fixed
Battery Life is MUCH better. (Phone has been on since midnight last night and the Battery life is at 90% at 9:44am)
UMA switches from Network better (Although most calls require two tries to connect)
Voice Dialing works better then .42
Much Better Memory handling.

Still Broken
Voice mail indicator is still broken
BB Messenger contacts are erased after a Battery Pull
Themes seem to return to its default setting after a Battery Pull

Nice.

As for your "Still Broken" list and the BB Messenger contacts being erased and the themes going back to default...I don't experience either one of those conditions on .42 and I've been doing a battery pull pretty much every day since my memory drops to 9MB (from 14MB) by the end of the day.

I tried changing my carrier to AT&T. Once I confirmed receipt of the text message I got the option in My Alerts. However, the voicemail icon doesn't show up. Not sure if it's the same reason the TMo icon doesn't show up or if the AT&T setup is not compatible.

After you change it to AT&T you have to confirm that you can receive txt messages. You'll get a code in an sms on your BB and you enter that code on the site. Once you do that you'll see the option appear. However, it didn't work for me. I never got the icon.

I never really thought that the different carriers' VM systems would be that different. Seems like it will not work on T-Mobile. Sorry to get you guys worked up.

<sarcasm> I am sure you are still very happy for me and the other ATT folks that do have this very cool feature. <\sarcasm>

Seriously, the best feature of YouMail is the personalized greetings. I have never had people so in awe of my VM system. They all leave a message saying: "wow, i have never been greeted by a VM with my actual name, that is so cool, what is it?"

YouMail is super smart for putting that it, they will pull customers like crazy with that feature.

It might have worked. It could be the same issue that is preventing the vm indicator from showing up in the first place in 4.5.

As for YouMail and personalized messages, I have had people call me a few times in a row after they hear my voice mail address for the first time as they cannot understand how my voice mail system knows who is calling and how it is able to address them by first name.

I like the personalized greetings but it doesn't work right in all cases....When my wife called it said, "Hello Unicel....." as her cell phone doesn't have her name associated with it on caller ID. Apparently, Unicel can't change it either... Also, when someone from work called it said, "Hello <name of company>..."

So, I just recorded my own greeting as normal.

If you add specific callers to your YouMail address book with their phone numbers, YouMail will be able to personally greet them.

I could try that...would help for individual callers. Won't help for people who call from work, though.

I work at a place that has the name Studio in it (which would gets shortened to 'Stud' on Caller ID), and for some reason when I first got YouMail it would answer, 'Hello Stud, Vicky can't get to the phone...' (the guys at work loved that) so I changed to my own recording but wasn't getting any email notifications. So I said the heck with it and switched back to the Smart Greeting. Now, when someone calls from work it just says, 'Hello, Vicky can't...' so it 'seems' to have fixed itself - at least for the moment - tho not sure if it's happening in all cases.

BTW, there's a YouMail greeting called 'very funny psychiatrist greeting' in Most Popular that is just hysterical. Have a listen sometime :0)

Installed 4.5.44 and this is what I have noticed.

Still Broken
BB Messenger contacts are erased after a Battery Pull
Themes seem to return to its default setting after a Battery Pull

Neither of these have been an issue for me, at least for the moment. Upon upgrading, free memory seemed to be considerably higher than before though the leak is clearly still there. A battery pull resets it. And Aerize Memory helps as well. Have noticed the battery drains quicker on the 4.5s tho...

Installed this beta yesterday, works much better than V .42, highlights is longer battery life & higher memory free space (12 mb after .42 Vs 22 mb after .44), guess we're so near to the final release if it's not this one already :)

Ive been using the .44 for half the day, and Its seeming a bit more stable than the earlier releases. Ive removed the reporting software package by deleting the contents of the folder. And regained about 4 megs. As for the memory leak, the memory cleaner thats built into the security option, works pretty good for a quick clean up. The only issue is, that when you hard reset, the options go back to their original state as being inactive...
oooh, were getting so close I can taste it..

Answering my own question, now that I've installed 4.5.0.44... The bug is not fixed.

Otherwise, I agree with others' impressions: stable overall, no VM icon, much better battery life.

Im having a hard time getting this one to work for some reason. Ive updated to other OS's no problem. I setup the install to go overnight so i could wake up to it being ready. I woke up this morning to an APP 200 error. So I reloaded the OS the restored all of my options. All of my third party apps are lost and to top it off my network status is OFF. Its not even trying to connect to the network. So Im kind of lost on this one.

Well you learn something new everyday i guess. I needed to get into manage connections and turn on my radio manually.

Still this install was a hassle and a half to get working. Im restoring my preferences and other apps right now. Ill update with more info later.

Im just now working all the kinks out. Im not sure why this install was such a nightmare. I lost all of my third party apps, Im going to find them all again and install.

App 200 Error

I would appreciate if someone using 4.5.0.44 could test if their phone shuts off and resets when going into to Media > My Pictures. This is happening to me using 4.5.0.42 when loading pictures from my 8GB memory card only, not from the device memory though. Its starts to load the thumbnails kind of slow and when its gets to the last picture it just BOOM resets. I have to save all my pics to device memory so i dont have this problem. I also noticed that if i view my pictures as "list" not "thumbnails" the reset does not occur, and im able to view all the pics fine in fullscreen. I guess its only happening when it loads the thumbnails. the problem with that is that i cant set it to view as "list" by default everytime i go into the folder. I hope they fixed this in .44
im hoping also this is not a memory card issue, because i have like 2gigs of music on it, and the media player and the whole thing works awsome... its like having an 8GB iphone, i have no issues with anything on my memory card, only when loading the damn thumbs from pictures in it.

Double check which one you got you probably need to scroll farther down the page and find the DESKTOP Manager not the DEVICE manager.

Thanks for your inputs.

now im gona have a little talk with my sister... LOL

on a side note... I havent had any major issues using .42 at all.. it all seems to work perfect, do you guys suggest upgrading to .44 just because it is more stable, smoother and more battery life from what i have heard? or stick with .42? Finally decided to move from the latest 4.2 OS to this beta. While the video feature is cool the improved appearance of the address book, calendar, browser, and more is completely worth it. And I thought the best feature was that I finally got some of the memory back. I had to reboot the 4.2 because it would drop from 8 to 4 MB every day. This beta immediately put me back up over 13 MB. Yes, thanks, this works now. The problem was that I created a YouMail Address book entry with an error in the number, and assigned it to 'w'. I spotted the error and corrected it in the address book, but doing so didn't automatically correct the speed dial entry. I had to do that as a separate step. So far I'm happy with YouMail, even without the icon. I wonder if the icon fix will work for YouMail too, or only T-Mobile voicemail. Since the option doesn't appear in the YouMail setup, I'm guessing it won't work.

Tangential question: Although OS 4.5 has built-in voice notes, I prefer to use the Dollars5 vNotes application that I purchased, because it doesn't force you to use the AMR file format. I sometimes send voice files to people and a lot of people don't like having to install RealPlayer--I don't like it either. So.....do you suppose it's possible to remove the voice notes from the OS to free up space?

There is net_rim_bb_voicenotesrecorder, which is only 105 kb. I thought it would be a bigger file. There's also net_rim_bb_voice, which may be something else. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble, if I only save 105 kb, but I may try it anyway.

Just did.. Removed the AT&T themes, any third party themes I had except my nifty Mac OS X looking one. The sample video, wall papers, PTT etc.. Only things I couldnt get rid of are the Dimension themes (I replied about it in the memory optimizing thread actually hehe)..

Only third party apps installed are Google Maps, Docs to Go, and Sudoku.

Still 12MB free. I seem to remember when I first got it having around 18-19 free right out of the box with just the default AT&T stuff on it..
Only thing I can think of is maybe its my mail box or text messages taking up all that space. I do have a few MB of pictures on it. Ill get those off and onto my Desktop and see if that makes any difference..

Quick question about email if anyone knows...
I use my BB with my regular imap email account. When I delete an individual email I get the option of either just on the handheld or handheld and server..
If I go to the top of my mailbox on the BB and use the 'Delete prior' option, will that wipe everything off the server or just the BB??
Ive been afraid to move past the 'Delete all prior items?' confirmation just in case..

John Clark
06-25-2008, 02:42 PM
"Delete Prior" will delete only from handheld, if I recall correctly.

Get those pics off of device memory and onto a memory card. Also, you can check your database sizes by going to Options >Status >Hit menu key and select "database sizes." You can see what else is eating memory as far as data goes.

monotremata

Oh durrr. I forgot I can go check database sizes! I do have a ton of text messages on here too that I imagine arent exactly space saving..

I keep telling myself to go get an SD card but just havent yet hehe.
I REALLY want one now that I can use the video cam!!

Looks like theres a whole megabyte just between both Messages and MMS Messages to free up. SMS is about 500k or so.
Theres a database called Content Store thats 11MB.. Whats in that my pics and ringtones?
Total database sizes are 13MB.. So yeah theres my extra memory..

Although just a few mins ago I went outside for a smoke break, decided to pull the battery and restart again.. Came back up at 12MB.. Now just a few mins later its at 11..

Ever since I loaded 4.5.0.44 I am not getting a sync of outbound messages from Outlook. Meaning when I send from the BB I get a copy in my Outlook outbox, but when I send from Outlook I stopped getting the messages in my sent list on the BB. I am on BES. The only odd thing that happened was during the load I got an error that the backup failed, but I did a restore and everything ok.

I always follow John's memory approach, deleting PTT, Help, and this time I deleted Quincy.

Any ideas?

Instead of "deleting Quincy" you can remove the entire pack of RIM Internal Tools by going to Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs and just uninstall RIM Internal Tools.

Not sure about the mail issue.

Thanks for that since if I have to start over that's an easier way!

More on the email thing....on the BB under email>options>settings>folder redirection, the sent items folder is not checked, and it wont let me select it!

I got an email from YouMail support, stating that at this time only ATT allows access to the voicemail icon (MWI) feature. So the OS upgrades aren't going to affect that for the other carriers unless they decide to change this policy. They also said that if T-mobile changed the policy they would send notification via email to their T-mobile users.

JC - I found another neato thing while cleaning up memory yesterday..

If you open up Media, and use the menu key and select Options...
I had that entry for Device Memory Limit set to 12MB.
I moved it up to 15 and it went up to 15 after a battery pull.
Dropped all my pics to my desktop yesterday, Im back up to 19 now..

So if anybodys device is getting stuck at either 5 or 12MB all the time and you think you should have more available, check the Media Options, I think by default its set to 5 but I cant remember cause it was a month or so ago I first changed it..

I'm satisfied with 4.5 working great so far, It now has an awesome browser so i don't have to scroll through every line of text, video camera, voice memos, now reads up to 8GB micro SD cards, (previous 4.2OS would not >( ) haha but now it does, media playback is fine still, adds an equalizer from what i understand, basically i'm happy, runs the same or better, and everything looks a bit classier haha

Cheers

just to know what about the language. I don't mind if the device language is english but for me is important to use local characters, as accents, ñ, etc. Is it possible after this english-assian languages upgrade?

thanks from a newbie on bb.

Why are you bringing this up in an old outdated OS thread?
