Help - What is this on my screen

Ok, so I have been using my blackberry for over 3 years but just today got a sound that sounded like my usual email sound but it is not in my messages folder and on the screen there is a number 1 with a yellow circle at the top right of the #1. It is on the Top left part of the screen about a centimeter from the left.

What is this?!

I have a Sprint 8703e Blackberry.
