What exactly does it do? Is it only for blocking SMS. messages, etc?

Its used by BES admin to control the device. Its like parental controls for your device...

If the device can do it, the firewall can block it

and for BIS as well, but what you see is what you get...

the Firewall will also block any and all applications from accessing anything on your device... it will give you a prompt if you wish to allow the app to access phone information, network, etc etc... its just makes the device a little bit more secure

I don't have BIS or BES at the moment. But I can enable/disable my firewall. And right below that I see "blocked messages for SMS, MMS, network." Does that mean I can use my firewall to block out unwanted SMSes?
