I was told on purchase date that there was 3rd party software to text message from a blackberry, just like you do any other phone. NOT having to find out ALL of your friends service provider and find out what the address is after the phone number. DOES THIS EXIST? If it doesn't I have effectively alienated almost all of my friends. I have a week to take this thing back if I can't text normally from my blackberry. HELP!

teleflip will send to any carrier. it isnt based on which carrier your fone is running through

It's not a phone software issue, it's a "how the carrier handles data" issue. If texting is important I'd suggest a different carrier.

I text from my BB all the time.

In my contacts I add a second email for their phone. Example: user number@<hidden>

Then to pretend you are composing an email, after choosing your contact, make sure you have the number@<hidden> in the "TO" field, type your message and send.

I've been doing this for a while now, piece of cake!!

Have you noticed a slower delivery time using teleflip versus regular sms?

I setup both for a few people and it worked fine either way, so it's not really a big deal.

Wirelessly posted (your electric?: BlackBerry7520/4.0.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3 UP.Link/5.1.2.12)

I spied all of my friends phones for a while when I got it to see what carrier they all had and, and then just added it right then and there. If your friends do not understand email I do not suggest teleflip since it says its own little message after you send it to them. My opinion is that the next software upgrade "4.1" will allow SMS.

Telflip is great. Discovered it in a magazine article and have been using it alot. Have found in informal testing that it works fast, with little in the way of delay to delivery. I have seen postings that it takes some time. The biggest advantage is that you do not even have to know your friends service provider. teleflip automatically codes the email to the text format for your friend. 2 issues we found are that it is limited in size (like only a 200+ characters) and that (at least on Nextel) that if you do not have the unlimited text package, it costs about 10 - 15 cents per message.
