Hi

I'm about to purchase a BB Storm, but the only thing that still holds me back is the lack of WiFi. I live in France, and will mostly use 3G+ when travelling, but unfortunately I have no 3G coverage where I live. I was wondering if the Storm's Bluetooth (it's 2.0) would enable me to get on my network and use a shared Internet connection, and shared printer. (BTW, the lack of WiFi is really a shame, such a great device and no WiFi!!! I would have have paid extra to have it!). I'm not very Bluetooth savvy (and a total Blackberry newbie) so I hope that someone here would be willing to share shis/her insight.

Thanks!

Dirik

If you have a BlueTooth printer you will need software on the BlackBerry to print to it. (Very limited)

As far as accessing the Internet via BlueTooth no, BlueTooth does not have that capability it has a very limited amount of services.

Thank you for your reply. The printer isn't a big issue (I thought it would be possible, maybe HP or some other 3rd party would have released an add-on, like they have done for the iphone). But I don't understand you when you state "Bluetooth doesn't have this capability": it sure has. (Bluetooth access points have been around for years). The question was: can the BlackBerry OS connect to the internet via Bluetooth? (in other words, can I configure the Bluetooth port for internet access and assign a static IP and DNS server adressses to it?)

Just like this here (for PalmOS):

(add http etc in front please, stupid rule prevents me from posting a link)

If yes, I'll go for a BlackBerry Storm, if no, I'll go for an Iphone!

Thanks...
Dirk

PS I guess that the Blackberry forums will get quite some trafic concerning this sort of Storm-vs-Iphone issues.....

BlackBerry FAQ - BlackBerryFAQ

No info on this particular question in there, sorry, I browsed the faq before posting, I'm on the internet since the early 90's

Stupid rule prevents stupid links.

1: it's not because one has posted more than 10 posts on this forum that he suddenly becomes less stupid

2: the link wasn't stupid: it was meant to illustrate that Bluetooth DOES have full-duplex capability=> it can indeed be used to access the Internet.

Thanks for your help.

Dirk

Guess you missed this in the FAQ:

No, I didn't miss that (been doing it for years, with my SonyEricson). It's the other way round. I try to overcome the lack of WiFi on the Storm, using Bluetooth instead. I want to use my DSL connection to get on the internet on the BlackBerry via a shared connection on a PC. As I explained in the original post, I have no 3G, just GPRS, where I live and work, only when I travel.

The link I just posted illustrates what I'd like to do.

It's very dissapointing indeed that a BlackBerry doesn't have WiFi.

Thanks!
Dirk

You can get eOffice if you want to print to a BlueTooth printer it is kind of expensive... There are very few solutions for printing via BlueTooth on a BlackBerry.

Ok, let me rephrase my answer..... As far as I am aware of BlackBerry BlueTooth does not have that capability.. (I was not aware we were expanding the discussion beyond BlackBerries.)

Interesting article but the range on BlueTooth is serverely limted 10 meters with LOS, unless you are going to be stationary, I don't see how useful that is going to be, or have a very small working area.

iPhone it is, BlackBerry is not for everyone that is why we have as many different carriers/phones out there for every to pick from.

Time will tell.

It's very dissapointing indeed that a BlackBerry doesn't have WiFi.

There are BB's with WiFi. There's just currently no 95xx with WiFi. If you need to have WiFi and you need a BB now you need to look at the other xx20 models.

I don't get this either. I'd just use a PC in such situations...

The 9520 is rumored to have wifi, so he try waiting for that.

I agree with you on that one. Opera Mini is a good alternative the only thing you miss out on on speed since wifi is faster them 3G

You're all right as far as Bluetooth Internet is concerned, In admit that was a hopeless attempt of mine. I guess I'll have to wait for the 9520 to be released, the problem being that I arrive at contract renewal right now.

Thanks for your replies. Just an additional info: yes, I need WiFi (or more precisely "non-carrier-provided internet access". Where I live, "pure" data-plans are extremely expensive. I have an unlimited 3G+ internet plan, but it's through my provider's WAP gateway only. This works reasonably well if you want to read the NYTimes, but for any other stuff, at least with my provider, there are many issues like not being able to login with a password (forums, online banking, I cannot login into my admin pages of the websites I am in charge of.... ). This, apparently, needs "pure" internet access. BUT: there are open WiFi spots just about everywhere I go, which I could use. So, not having WiFi is an important issue for me. For the rest, a Storm would suit me perfectly well.

Regards
Dirk

just to throw it out there, Rove Mobile Admin Screenshots - Mobile Admin on BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Web Browser (http://www.roveit.com/mobileadmin/screenshots/) Will allow you to manage IIS to an extent, not sure if that would help you any.
