I have read through a bunch of threads here and elsewhere and can't find a solution to work. I recently got my phone off eBay and it is relatively worthless to me if I can't text message. I have all the latest Desktop software and downloaded JL_Cmder to run a 'resettofactory' on it in order to remove any IT blocks as I assumed it was since my problem sounded similar to many others I read. However, after executing the process several times, I still don't have a text option. Any other ways I can get that back?

Welcome to the forums. The resettofactory option only works on devices running 4.3 and up. Follow these steps and it should fix you right up:
Remove IT Policy - BlackBerryFAQ (http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/Remove_IT_Policy)

I am currently running 4.5. I don't have a "wipe" option on in my security to run option 2.

Make sure that your carrier has SMS enabled on your account. Happened to me once.

Oops my fault.

Options > Security Options > General Settings >Press the trackwheel > select Wipe Handheld.

Well, I didn't have to do that. It works now? I dunno how it happened, maybe I did something right and didn't notice.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forums.

If you're device is running 4.3 or higher, you can use the ResetToFactory option in JL_Cmder. It's a lot quicker and easier. I would suggest upgrading you OS and then running ResetToFactory.

Then download and install JL_Cmder and use the ResetToFactory selection. Make a backup of your data prior to doing this.

I also have a collegue with a 8700G and his device is running:

v4.1.0.284 (Platform 2.0.0.120)
Cryptographic Kernel v3.8.3.7

and he can text! This is a wild shot here, if i were to wipe the handheld, and reinstall this version, do you all think i will be able to send SMS messaging.

Thanks.

Bear in mind i only updated my BB device yesterday to:
v4.5.0.124 (platform 2.7.0.92)
Cryptographic Kernel v3.8.5.32a

Do you have the option to Compose SMS? If so, what happens when you try to send one?

No i do not even have the option to compose sms

when i scroll to messages and click the trackwheel the options that come out are:
Compose Email
Place Call
Search
View Folder
View Saved Messages
Options
Switch Application
Close

In that exact order.
