Thanks for all the pics! That was very decent of you. :-)

If it's not too much trouble, could you take a pic of the 8700c side-by-side with the BB 7520? I'd like to see how it compares for size with my current "CrackBerry". 8-)

And I'm not even gonna ASK how you were able to get your hands on a Vertu phone! Those things are HELLA expensive!!! :-o

Interesting. Using your photos and carefully measuring the keys, the 8700's keys are 1.87 times the area of the 700's. Screen area on the 8700 is 1.08 times the 700's.

Sorry Boygenius but I have a dumb request, any chance you can take a picture of the 7100g or whichever on top of the 8700, they look like a very close match in you pics above, but I was just curious to really see how much size difference there is between the 2.

If not no worries.

There has been alot of questions about the new Treo 700w and its specifications.

Does it have the 320x320 screen?
What is the memory specifications on the device?
What is the processor speed? (Rumored Intel PXA272 624MHz?)

Thanks for your time

for those of you that have the new 8700, a quick question...Can you assign ringers to specific contacts within the address book?

for those of you that have the new 8700, a quick question...Can you assign ringers to specific contacts within the address book?I don't have the 8700 yet, but this is definitely a BlackBerryOS 4.1 feature (the shipping OS on the 8700). You can assign custom rings on a per-contact basis.

Does it have the 320x320 screen? The resolution is 240x240 as I understand it. For the rest, I'm not familiar.

Yes, You can assign ringers to a contact but only for a phone call, I wish I could assign certain ringers or sounds for emails, level 1 messages, and so on.

I am surprised with all of the high-end stuff you have that you don't have a Nokia 8800...

Nokia 8800 = A peasant to the Vertu...not sayin anything rude I just mean in general, Vertu is basically the Highest End Nokia...And sadly to say I do have an 8800, LOL. But whatever phone you got aslong as you use it wisely thats all that matters...If it serves the purpose then who cares what you use...

Haa, nah I wouldnt take it that far, thats my girls phone that I got her...nice try... Treo 700w is weird, looks like there wont be a GSM one at all or atleast until Sept-Oct 2006. And windows isnt confirmed yet it could be Palm OS ...

Does Nokia make the Vertu? I've never seen it until this post.

Don't be sad about having the 8800. I'd love to have one. My current "high-end" phone is a Samsung E880. Half of my collection of approximately 20 GSM phones are classic collector's items such as the Motorola Select 2000e. Unfortunately, I have the habit of buying phones when I am stressed out (as opposed to smoking cigarettes or something), so I usually get one every few weeks.

Vertu is a seperate company, the whole entire OS is nokia based, and modified for Vertu, nokia has no part of software or hardware for instance no nokia office has the capability to flash or upgrade software on the phones..8800 sucks in my opinion, the buttons are way too small and close together, the D-Pad sucks can barely press up, OS isnt that bad, but all in all dont like the phone.

Interesting... I consider myself fairly well up in the phone world, but I'd never heard of Vertu until now...You don't want to ask how much they cost. With a Liquidmetal body (stronger than Titanium) and a sapphire crystal screen, it's one of the most expensive cellphones on the market. We're talking about the ballpark of $4000, I believe.

This is a phone you see in Bang & Olufsen, Holt Renfrew, Neiman Marcus, and Tourneau stores. Rich stuff.

I wasn't planning to ask... I consider that to be rude... :)

Anyway, the last uber-expensive phone I looked at was back when I had Verizon the last time and I wanted the StarTac 2004 from Motorola Korea.

Can we have a side profile shot of the Treo 700w and BB8700, BoyGenius?

So I can see how thick the Treo is compared to the new BB8700.

I want it so, but it must be smaller than the Treo.

Yea and can you belive one of them is even on backorder! Maybe they only made 1, Donald Trump lost it and needs it replaced!

Correct me if I am wrong but they made 240 of them and yes there are sold out. If you think about it 240 selling out isn't that much, think of all the rich people in this world, 240 of them cant' buy the phone? All the oil sheiks, billionaires, millionaires, etc...makes sense, atleast Vertu is smart enough to capitalize off them...

I can definitely back that up. When I was in Q'utar about a year ago, even the people with jobs that we might consider menial had multiple high-end phones, all with activated service. I asked one man that I met about his phones (Nokia 6270, 6620, Moto V620, and a Samsung that I can't recall), and he said that one had his QTel SIM, another his one for Bahrain, another for Saudi Arabia, and another for Egypt (he holidays there frequently).

On the other hand though, one of the richest people I have ever met (only knew he was rich because he had a Centurion card) was rockin an old LG Verizon phone, and was lamenting that someone would pay $1000 for a phone (he was looking at a SE P900 in the Atlanta airport).

No, he didn't get to be that rich by wasting money like that.

Knowing what we know of Donald Trump I would not be too surprised to find out that he managed to talk someone into giving him an expensive phone like that for free maybe with the caveat that he would manage to get it on his show for a free plug. I mean after all didnt he manage to get his new wife expensive wedding ring as a freebie.

You gotta think though...the semi-rich, actors, and heiresses (you know who I'm talking about) will buy these higher end phones...Like someone else said in this post, you don't get to be rich by buying expensive crap like that. Semi-rich people buy it to look even richer, just like the rednecks up here in Kentucky with the 3000 speaker system and a mustang living in a trailer.

But there's a difference between being good and looking good, a friend of mine says: Looking good is when your friends are impressed by what you drive. Being good is when you have more money than they do.

I think that may apply to phones here, too. But don't get me wrong: I wouldn't give up my Nextel 7520 for anything, because I certainly get my money's worth out of it.

BG I'm not sure the question has been asked elsewhere but how does qwerty on the 700w stack up to qwerty on the 8700. I've used both the Treo 600 and the BB 7510 and to me its the comfort of the user that determinese the qaulity of the device. I'm currently on the toy that is the sidekick II and it will soon be time to switch. I'm leaning more towards the Treo because its a nice blend of OS, TOUCHSCREEN and well the Form Factor (Plus as much as I like the i730 I have bad dreams about the slider getting stuck or worse). Long story short in terms of button pushin on a Treo vs 8700 which one gets the BG seal of approval

Hmm...I have a samsung i730, sidekick 2, treo 650 and treo700, let me ask you this how do you like the i730? I love the fact that I can send attachments directly from the device via gmail or my exchange server and download an mp3 in 3-4 seconds while I am on the go. The web browsing alone has me using the treo700w just for that. If you are used to the EVDO there is nothing else that can compete at the moment. In terms of the keyboard I like the keyboard very much on the treo700w by far the best on the treo series, and very usuable. Compared to a 8700 keyboard I would go with an 8700. After all the focus is email so the keyboard has to be above average. If you need everything all in one I would go with the treo700w, if your needs are dedicated email, and then web browsing, AIM, etc can't beat a BlackBerry 8700.

I will post pictures of the 8700 next to the 7520, but 7520 is very big compared to a 7290 and 7290 is very big compared to 8700. If jack is taller than jill and amy is shorter than jack how tall is sarah? LOL

Thanks, BG. While I currently have the BB 7520 with Nextel, the "Sprintization" of our network has left me so furious at Sprint Nextel, that when I get the BB 8700, I may very well switch carriers to either Cingular or Verizon. So, seeing your 8700c next to the BB I currently have WILL be useful info for me, as it will let me know what to expect in terms of the size difference.

BTW, I WAS already aware of the size difference between the 7520 and the 7290. In the 14 months I've been selling cell phones, I've sold the 7290 for both Cingular and T-Mobile, so I've already done a side-by-side comparison of those 2 models. The main size difference there comes from the speaker phone "hump" on the back, which makes it thicker at the top end, and from the external antenna sticking up from the left corner. ;-)

Oh, and then there's the fact that I switched to the High Capacity Battery, which makes it, what, about 1/8th of an inch thicker? :?

Love the math by the way! I actually went to a Verizon Store near my office today and the guy let me try out a demo model. I'm one of those impulse gadget buyers who does the due diligence to the nth degree. I gotta admit I was wrong on the i730 it seems like a sturdy device and it seems everyone is raving about it (sans lack of DUN and WiFi cutting off the phone) But this is a Black Berry Forum and truthfully I think I had maybe 1 issue ever with my old 7510. They are def great devices..to make everyone on the forum sad I think I may end up going with the i730 and not necessarily wait on the damn treo.

P.S.: I know you have a ND on the Treo and what not but rather than ask bench marks which has the faster CPU i730 or 700w

Boy Genius
11-15-2005, 11:58 PM
you know that question has never been asked and I am not completely sure, the treo700 specs have not been released and it is still an unreleased device not positive. i730 is 520mhz, pretty damn fast.

barjohn
11-16-2005, 12:29 AM
You may want to look at the Sprint PPC 6700 (I think Verizon will have its own version soon). A really nice device with fast EVDO and the Bluetooth stack is not crippled like VZW, less expensive data service and a much easier device to carry around. Only down side is screen is smaller and I think volume could be better. THe keyboard is much better than the i730 and it runs WM5 which is a huge improvement.
