Software For BlackBerry® Curve (TM) 8900 smartphone

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.6.1.353 (EastAsia) plus English

Package Version: 4.6.1.353
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.6.1.231
* Software Platform: 4.2.0.108
* File name: 8900jEastAsia_PBr4.6.1_rel353_PL4.2.0.108_A4.6.1.2 31_Hutchison.exe
* File size: 121.59MB

Download the OS here:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=06997F04A7DB92466A2BAA6EBC8B872D

Instructions to install on ANY 8900 from ANY CARRIER.

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

For the previous OS:

I downloaded it and installed on my laptop.
Then, run BDM to upgrade.

BDM said:

Click Options if you want to install the older applications.

I click Options,

But as you see, when I marked to choose the version installed on my laptop

I have downloaded the new OS and then followed the procedure that you click loader and delete vendor ect...but all that did was load up my applications like google apps ect and it said it was updated in 30 seconds. On the page where everything is downloaded to there are lots of small files that say loaderres1028 all the way to loaderres2070 to they have to be added into the loader?

Its just that you can load the additional languages. When upgrading, just leave the languages you dont want.

When people say their battery life was improved, it would be helpful to know what OS they upgraded from.

Or better yet, not claim this at all. How can you tell that the battery life is better within a day or 2 of installing a new OS? There are also many variables that affect battery life, including usage of various apps/functions, where your BB is (searching for signals, etc.) and the like.

Nevertheless, EVERY new OS release (beta or official) will always be accompanied by gushing reports that "everything is so much FASTER!" and battery life is "WAY BETTER!" Take these reports with a grain of salt. Aside from very early device OS upgrades, pretty much every OS I've installed shows, at best, marginal improvements in speed and/or battery life. Often there is no real discernible difference. (Sometimes connectivity or wifi/network switching seems better, though).

I am boring old fellow: I use my phone the same time each day, send the same "reply all" emails to my colleagues, use google maps or poynt to find food while traveling, play games while sitting on the can, and use the camera to take pictures of my travels. (I work for the gov't)

With that said, my battery life HAS improved. Coming from my last OS (.206), which would barely get me through the day, I'm 1.5+ days from my last charge and I'm only at 30%. So take it as you will, my personal experience is noted.

DrMoze:
Users ask for feedback on these new OS, regardless of how far fetched it is, it IS feedback. Sorry you're so butthurt.

The first time I upgraded my OS from the factory settings, the battery usage was massively improved, but I only noticed this as it had been previously very poor. I'd be hard-pressed to notice any change now.

so i upgraded from the factory 114 and have to say the battery and performance increases are greatly exaggerated. standby and talktime improve slightly but battery drain heavy apps like pandora don't. it maybe a tad snappier all around but it's really not noticeable. every user is different but in my opinion, upgrading, in general, isn't worth it. wait for the official 5.0 OS update i say.

Considering I previously wasn't using any battery intensive apps, and battery was going down 80% in a day, and now it goes down about 15% I'd say it was a marked improvement. It seems strange that you'd discourage upgrading to point releases. There may be other fixes, for security or stability, or usability (like that nice holding down the menu button trick). It's a little arbitrary to say people should wait til 5.0.

Hi All,
New to thread and to blackberry. I had a Pharos M619 (Blackbrick) not your daddy's blackberry that's for sure. lol I am loving my 8900 even though it was a struggle to give up Win Mobile 6.1. However, the functionality of the blackberry has really impressed me and the form factor doesn't even compare. Downloading the upgrade now and if it improves my blackberry then I will be a real happy camper.

Update went smooth, considering I had one file from BB Messenger that wouldn't restore. Other than that I will have to put it through the test and see how it performs. So far a little slow, maybe another reboot will help.

In fact, I couldn't hear an audible difference between a notification set to "Low" vs "Medium"; it's the same volume.

Can anyone with this update tell me if "Low" is in fact "Low" and not the same as "Medium" for say, "Classic Phone" ring tone?

Download went flawless, install went good with exception of Facebook not reinstalled. I had to make three attempts at getting Facebook on it. On my second attempt, Facebook appeared but once I rebooted it disappeared. For the last 24 hours here are some of the performance results:

Battery life- does seem better than before, that is with me running music player for about 1 hour, youtube for 30 minutes, surfing web off and on for about an hour, application use (Olive Tree, Facebook, JabpLite, Project Manager, Viigo, calender, calculator) about an hour total.

I need to do some more testing without any device to computer hookup at all and report back.

Day Three of upgrade; I would consider myself just short of a power user but I do put my handhelds through constant load. Yesterday and today battery went down to 35% after about 13 to 14 hours of use. If I didn't use the web, GPS and Media Player it would probably last 24 hours with no problem. I am impressed that I have been able to listen to music for about an hour and 45 minutes today without recharging the phone. I used BB Maps, Trapter and GoodFoodNearYou throughout the day but not real heavy. I also had talk time of about 33 minutes. I would think that setting the phone at bedtime mode at 35% I would have gotten to 24 hours with no problem. For what it is worth, I haven't really owned my BB long enough to really tell the difference from the last version.

"first problem ever with a OS: I tried 2 times modifying a contact by including a birth date. Both times the phone freeze and the only solution was to pull the battery out."

I've noticed the same behavior with OS rel317 (4.6.1.206), with birthdays and anniversaries, sometimes when you change these values on a contact the phone seems to freeze for a couple of seconds, then occasionally goes to the white screen with some error code and RESET highlighted, which I then select to restart.

I upgraded to this latest OS yesterday from factory-installed 114 (I'm pretty sure, anyway). I hadn't noticed any major issues until today when I attempted to send an MMS/picture. When I add picture, to move up in the file directory, I MUST use menu > up - just clicking on the highlighted 'up' above the sample thumbnails takes me to a completely different program (friends timeline on UberTwitter). When I use the menu and select the desired image, it says "Message content size exceeds limit". Funny that that happens with a picture I took WITH the phone. Attempting MMS through the Media app gives the same result. Anyone else having this issue or capable of offering a solution?

ok...I'm at my wits end on this. I have upgraded countless BB's before and NEVER had this issue. I tried to upgrade my 8900 (curently on .199) to the latest and greatest. I've installed it, deleted the vendor.xml file, rane apploader, and it will not recognize that an upgrade is available. I did a battery pull...restarted it...still nothing.

What am I missing????

You say you ran apploader. So was that just in DM? Have you tried bypassing DM and running loader.exe? It's in Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader. Make sure DM is off when you run it. That is the only way I upgrade OS now. I have had problems upgrading with DM.

I have tried both methods. Using Apploader and DM (not at the same time). I actually wiped the BB and reverted back to the native .114 OS that it came with...and STILL wont update. I'm going to try a different PC this evening to see something went crazy with my computer. ugh...thanks for the input.

Maybe you want to try removing the OS completely from your computer and downloading a new copy before funning it again. I believe another troubleshooting step is to completely uninstall DM as well as the OS and reboot the computer before reloading everything. (I can't remember the exact circumstances but I had to do that once when I was having problems with an upgrade.)

I'm guessing it's not really a problem with your computer or you wouldn't have been able to install 114.

Thats just it, I did not install .144, the DM did a complete wipe and wiped my previous os .199 and put it back to factory defaults. even wiped my contacts and everything...

I did remove the OS and all the DM software from the pc as well....

I don't think resetting to factory defaults installs the previous OS, just resets all settings. And DM cannot install an OS to the phone if you don't have it on the computer.

Wirelessly posted (8320 on T-Mo)

Downloaded in minutes, installed on a new 8900 very quickly.
Been running it for a couple of days no problems.

One more vote for increased battery life.

Based on my usage, my battery would be almost drained by the end of 2 days with 206. Now its still at 50%. I have to spend more time to collect additional sample points, but initial indications are positive.

I'm all upgrade guy, and I updated my former 8820 as soon as new FW was on the horizon and didn't fear the forthcoming shit in the fan(anyway, it fell into the toilet and died at last). But yesterday I got my new 8900 with .94, and now I'm so "caring" about this new piece of beauty(usually this lasts for about a week) and I'm not sure whether I should update or not.

Blackberry is now officially in Ukraine, and could anybody tell me if there is Ukrainian language at last?

I upgraded from the "stock" 4.6.1 from T-Mobile. Battery life is dramatically improved. As is general performance. BUT, I can no longer "resend" messages. :(( There are some UI tweaks that I don't love, too, but I can deal with it for the battery life.

Hi, I'm new to blackberry. I have .114 right now. Should i upgrade to .231?

Also, my phone can never seem to stay connected to wifi and UMA. Will upgrading fix this problem?

thanks!

What is the most significant difference between .114 and .231?

What is the most significant difference between .114 and .231?

Minor UI tweaks, increased battery life. Bugs and improvements really differ from device to device. Try it yourself, you can always revert to 84/114 if the new one ceases to function properly.8-)

My BB is locked to Rogers, but I have now unlocked it for Fido. Will updating my OS interfere with the fact that my phone is unlocked? Will I have to unlock it again or something? Yeah I know, I'm a newb

No; once a phone is unlocked, it is always unlocked.

This OS seems to have more lag then when i was using .206

May try .250 and see what that's like.

the web goes faster. You do not have to download a video to watch it. The videos are more crisp. I don't really see any other difference. I'm a novice blackberry user so im not too sure what to look for.

I recently updated to .206 (previous verison), and noticed that the notification volumes were much louder than before.

In fact, I couldn't hear an audible difference between a notification set to "Low" vs "Medium"; it's the same volume.

Can anyone with this update tell me if "Low" is in fact "Low" and not the same as "Medium" for say, "Classic Phone" ring tone?

My Quiet profile I use for the office is now waaay too loud!

If you had the Curve (83xx) series when it first came out, you would know that the volume (even on low) was pretty loud. Then future updates to OS decreased the volume.
I noticed when I first got my 8900, the volume was fairly low..but still audible at a good distance. But after the .231 update, it is without a doubt louder.
