View Full Version : Changing timeout

Complete newb here, I don't even actually own a blackberry, but my boss has been all over my case the last week or so to help him fix his Blackberry and since I'm the intern, of course I have to do it. I need to change the length of the "timeout" time to something longer than 2 minutes. I've seen several post with similar problems, but this one mainly concerns connecting to email servers here at our work. On the blackberry verizon page where I can edit my settings and advance settings for the email accounts you can't actually edit the timeout settings. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

It's not editable.

Can I ask why you (or your boss) has a need to change that?

Are you sure he doesn't mean the security time out when his BB locks and he needs to re-enter his password?

My boss needs the "timeout" changed because on Sundays our mail server is doing a huge backup, plus writing all it's information onto a tape server, basically its being used at a high CPU rate and responses from the server are slow. Well during this time he still wants to have access to his email, but the server takes longer than the allotted 120 seconds by the phone to respond.

Well, it's not editable on a BIS. My guess (and this is a guess) is that the only way to get more control would be to run a BES. But you might try calling Verizon Customer Support and ask to speak to a BlackBerry specialist.

I found out on BIS you cannot change the timeout, I'm fairly certain it is possible with a BES. I also found out that the Blackberry takes a snapshot of the mailbox upon opening it. If the mailbox has more than 900 messages then it is much more likely to timeout due to the vast size of the mailbox. This explains it better than I can.

"When the Blackberry Internet Service connects to an integrated account (this occurs once every 15 minutes), it takes a snapshot of the entire inbox. Generally, if the integrated account’s message count is greater than 900 messages, the Blackberry Internet Service will time out and no new mail will be brought over to the smartphone. However, messages may still arrive on the smartphone if the Blackberry Internet Service can take the snapshot of the entire inbox quickly enough.

To resolve the issue, please move some older messages into a subfolder so that the Blackberry Internet Service can connect successfully with the integrated account."
