View Full Version : BB 7290 as Modem speed question....

I have a 7290 and did all of the steps necessary to have it all hooked up to my laptop for internet use. It works getting on the net and the pop up in the taskbar says "Blackberry 7290 modem at 115.2 kb/s" but the internet is way slower than that.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I followed some steps on a different forum to get the modem settings right but its operating very slowly.

gsm sucks. the reason its slow is because its slow. verizon is your best bet for the modem setup. i hear 8.5k a sec is what cingular usually downstreams

Haven't had this question for a while.

The 115.2k is the serial link speed between the BB and the desktop. It is totally meaningless. As the previous poster articulated so eloquently, GPRS (which is the data piece, not GSM) is 30-40 kbps on average. About dial up speed.

right. you forget that there is huge latency with gsm! gprs is situated within gsm. 700ms pings in good service areas. thats very high. when i said 8.5 i was being generous, its about 3.5 k-4k a second. we should start calling it tdma, since gprs uses tdma. you know split some hairs. anyway dude long story short, its a shitty dial up connection :)

thanks a lot. That makes sense about 115k being between the blackberry and the computer. And that also makes sense about Gsm or gprs being shitty. I heard some things about them not being too fast.

Thanks again
