I just heard from a friend that RIM violated a US patent or something, his details were weak, but im sure some one here has more info...

Is it true that BB will be shutting down service soon?

You're right to assume someone here knows the details, and if you use the search feature you'll find the answer. Here's one thread:

Is it true that BB will be shutting down service soon? You got it mixed up. Yes, RIM allegedly violated a patent (But I don't believe it) and NTP is trying to shut down, but the US government is trying to STOP the shutdown of the network.

This is all moot anyway now, because RIM has a software workaround that doesn't violate the patent. The BlackBerry network is never going to shut down, because of so many factors (US government is trying to prevent shutdown; RIM has workaround; preliminary judgement that patent is invalid, etc). Don't listen to a thing the media says about it - they hype it up quite a bit.
