Hold the * key.

Well, that works on the 7100. On many other models, with the home screen shortcuts enabled, holding the K key works.

neither worked. I have a speed dial assigned to the "K" key and when I hold down the * key, it asked if I wanted to assign that key to a speed dial. any other suggestions?

What model BB do you have. As I posted, the * key lock only works on the 7100.

If you press the K key quickly, it will lock the keyboard. If you hold it down, it will dial the speed dial associated with the K key.

It really does work.

I just tried it on my 7250 and it did not work. I lock my keyboad using the icon but a shortcut would be nice. I just moved the icon to the top of the screen to access it it quicker then scrolling to the bottom.

*7290 Testing Results
Dial from Home Screen Enabled = Must select 'Lock Handheld' icon.
Dial from Home Screen Disabled = 'K' will lock handheld.

To Enable/Disable 'Dial from Home Screen' goto your Phone, Options and the setting is inside 'General Options.'

You could always move the lock icon to be at the top of the list. Move the scroll wheel such that the lock icon is selected, hold down the Alt key and click the scroll wheel. Choose Move Application from the menu, then scroll the wheel and put the lock icon somewhere more reachable. I had the lock icon at the top of the list for a while, then I just changed the settings such that it locks automatically when holstered...this works better for me...
