8-) [FONT=Comic Sans MS]I have a 8700R I got for free at the Rogers Launch Party and I want to sell it. I don't physically have it yet as it is being shipped to me from Toronto. I should recieve it in a week so please keep that in mind. I am already getting one from my work next week as well so I don't need the other one.

I am just inquiring about how much people are willing to shell out for the device which is out now. Rogers is already selling the device unlocked for about 650 (tax included) but there quickly becoming unavailable.

My questions to all of you is, how badly do u want it and how much are u willing to pay tops..

Thanks

Is this locked to Rogers? Would I be able to use this on the Cingular Network?

Its definately Locked to Rogers. Rogers are freaks when it comes to locking their devices.

I spoke with rim as to when the devices from the launch party are supposed to be shipped out. I was told that they are to go out on the the 28th of this month.

I think all of the Rogers devices are locked to there network. I hear you can call them and ask them to unlock it though cuz technically it's illegal to bind you to particular network when you own the device.

Anyway, the 8700R will definatly be locked to the Rogers network. If I find any unlocking tools I will post it up for you guys.

Rogers has a $250 price tag for unlocking their devices. You're better of using Bongo Wireless at that rate...

I'm lucky I guess I work 10min from Bongo, that being said the GSM Unlocker would be a welcome alternative for others. Love to know how they do it though?

Sorry, my edit might create confusion concerning Finch's post here, which responds to my edited post pre-edit, and which is now a separate thread: http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=19484 (http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=19484)

My apologies.

Rogers charges $250 for the unlock code. Just to make sure of it I called my brother in law who works for Rogers and also checked w/ my friends roomate who also works for Rogers and both told me it's $250. Not $60.00

No because it's locked. You would have to have it unlocked before you could use a Cingular sim.

I wonder what the law is in CA about locking devices. Wonder if their is a clause somewhere that says they have to unlock it if you ask?

ChrisBenson

There is no such law. If you want them to unlock it they will charge you $250.00 period. I travel very often so I am considering not waiting for an unlock solution and pay Rogers Wireless $250 for the unlock code. Might sound crazy I know but that's chump change compared to what my roaming rates will be if I use Rogers while in the U.S. and overseas.

K, most of you are completely off topic but im gonna add more fuel to the flame. I recall in the news that there was a client of Rogers that requested his phone be unlocked for free and eventually did get it unlocked for free. The idea behind all this was because by law, when you purchase a device, you are lawfully the owner of the device and therefore, should not be restricted by your wireless network. I am sure if you argue enough with Rogers they will do it for free. Just be creative and use a little social engineering.

Rogers also tells you they SUBSIDIZE the device -- which they do -- and to protect themselves they lock it. The $250 simply makes up the subsidy cost. You own the device but you paid a subsidized rate on condition that you keep the phone on their network. Rogers is billion dollar corporation -- they have top lawyers. Something tells me they no what theyre doing and are not breaking the law.

I certainly wouldn't pay anything close to what Rogers is asking for an 8700 in Canada. The data rates are ridiculous. In the early days up here I had two of the earliest Blackberries and really liked them a lot. They even had a more reasonable unlimited data rate in those days. I see from Rogers' website that they even require you to lock in for two and three year plans if you want an unlimited data plan. Sucks. I'll stick with my Hiptop2 with its $20 per month unlimited data plan! And I'm not locked into anything by the way. I don't need all the fancy business software, just a reliable and cool emailer and web browser with a great keyboard and integrated camera.

That's funny, at that rate your probably going to have to sign a 3yr contract with Rogers. Contract free your looking at $450-$525 CDN
