View Full Version : Important info on using Cingular 7290 as Modem

I've been working on this issue for a couple weeks as I purchased my 7290 specifically to be used as a alternate road connection with my laptop. I was falsely sold the blackberry by my business rep who insisted that it could be used as a modem (turned down free aircard for this).

Anyway, I followed Mark's and others tutorials over and over to no avail. Finally out of desperation, I installed the chinese/japanese 4.0 OS for the 7290. Now, I already had every setting setup on my blackberry and laptop according to the tutorials mentioned above. On my first connection attempt afterward, voila!

My speeds are not anything to be jealous of, but I am connecting now.

So, following Mark's tutorial (sorry,no link) and installing the japanese/chinese 4.0 OS seems to work.

Previously, I was running the 3.8 os and never got past the 718 PPP error.

--

One problem remains...
I can now connect and gain an internet connection, but by default I am not granted access to any cingular dns resolution. I can ping public IP's but no name resolution.

Luckily, I host my on name servers and can use them for my resolution but that won't be an option for anyone else.

I am getting an Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.

Any thoughts?

I never received the 734 error. According to DUNS documentation, that is simply a PPP disconnect from the host. 718 is 50/50 dialer and host fault while 734 is almost always the host.

Are you on Cingular? What operating system is your PC?

SUCCESS!!!!!!

I have a document from cinular with DNS name servers, and they work!!!

here are the address:
66.209.10.201
66.209.10.202

you have to put them in manually, and it will work. my connection is slower then heck compaired to my dsl but it finally works!!!

Have FUN!

Excellent, thanks for the dns.

Regarding the bandwidth, I believe Cingular has some sort of cap on for the blackberry, not that they would know. The GPRS network is rated for 160k easily and I'm within a mile to a tower. With my Sony Aircard I get just over 500k (of course, this is using the Edge technoloty).

well i was testing it out at my house and didnt have full reception so i was figuring that was why i didnt have great speed. stinks to know that they capped gprs. oh well it works, all i have to do is turn off images and i can get by.

Yes please someone answer this question :D

According to my Business Rep, definitely not. The connection is over data channels (hence the crap speed), so it should definitely not count against plan minutes.

Of course, my same rep sold me the phone with the selling point of using it as a modem.

i hope he is right. nothing has popped up on my cingular account online, but there is a huge delay so i must wait.

you have to put them in manually, and it will work.

Where do you put in the DNS IPs? TCP option does not have a place.

Does this help the 734 error?

Thanks

DNS options are configured in the on the TCP/IP settings of your Dial up networking Connection (on your computer), but it won't help the 734 error.

Make sure you have the Extra Init string added and IP header compression disabled.

I am not sure how to install the HK 4.0 OS software. I downloaded it, ran install which extracted the files to D:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\7290-v4.0.0.185_P1.8.0.117.

Using the desktop, I point the app loader at that directory but which alx files to I install? The Blackberry.alx or all of them (except Chinese).?

I did run the backup first.

I could not find a readme or any other installation instructions.

Thanks.

You should connect your device to your pc with desktop manager running. Then run the HK install. It will do everything for you including the backup.

Hmm, I did that. DM said it was connected before I started.

During install, it told me to shut down the manager. It then ran the install and had a checkbox to restart the manager. It did not install to the BB. I had to search around my PC filesystem to find out where it unzipped the alx files. Looks like the final install step did not run itself.

The BB has 3.8 still.

you need to delete the vendor.xml file in one of the rim directories. this is a known problem and deleteing it fixes your problem.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader is the directory where the vendor.xml file is. if your worried about deleteing it just rename it, then restart blackberry desktop and everything should work again including the install of the 4.0 software.

Cool!

I actually had this working on a Cingular Blackberry back in early December. I quit my job and had to turn in my laptop. Until now I have not been able to make it work again on my new one. I didn't remember the DNS step. Thanks for the tip, AuEngineer!

I just received my bill for the month of December, and I have no charges for the time that I was using this type of connection. I kept my usage fairly low until I could see whether or not I would be charged, but I was connected for probably an hour between 12/7 and 12/15.

Oops! It was D123456 who provided the DNS tip. Thanks to both of you! I am currently connected via my Blackberry running software ver 3.8 at a blistering 57.6Kbps. I followed Mark's instructions and added D123456's tip to manually configure DNS.

Thanks for the information in this thread. I have updated the BlackBerryModem FAQ to include this info:

Q: I get an Error 718 when I try to connect!
A: This problem happens most often on Cingular and T-Mobile. It looks like you may have a DNS server issue. You may need to manually configure your DNS servers. To configure, follow these steps:1. Go to Start->Network Connections->Show All Connections
2. Right-click your BlackBerry Internet icon, select Properties.
3. A window will open. Click the Server Types tab.
4. Click TCP/IP Settings.
5. Select "Use the following DNS server addresses:"
6a. If you use Cingular, enter: 66.209.10.201 and 66.209.10.202
6b. If you use T-Mobile, enter: 216.155.175.105 and 216.155.175.106
6c. If you use another carrier, enter: 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (or recommended DNS)Further information can also be found in this thread (http://blackberryforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2066&highlight=).

d123456, thanks. Deleting the vendor.xml did allow my installation of the OS 4.0 to complete.

Mark, in step 3, I don't have a Server Types tab. I only have General, Options, Security, Networking and Advanced.

My problem is not Error 718 in any case (as AuEngineer said the DNS error would not help me). My error is 734 - supposedly resolveable with addition of WIX to my account. My account is a company account so I won't be able to convince them to add this option:(

Has anyone tried getting the "WIX" entries added to their account lately? I was told by several reps (multiple calls) that they are not available anymore and that the "pay per use" has been dropped from the billing system. I was told that I needed to add a data connect plan (minimum plan is 5MB per month @<hidden> $20).

Can anyone confirm?

AuEngineer

Not sure about the addition of packages, but you definitely need the Data Connect package.

I don't have Data Connect on mine, and it works as a modem. I followed the instructions in Mark Rejhon's modem howto: http://www.blackberryforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2144&highlight=modem

The WIX features were put on mine when I bought it back in December.

Curious if anyone "tackled" the PPP 734 connect messages as of yet?

Even with these packages installed on my plan:

WIX EXTENDED INTERNET
DATA CONNECT ISP
WRLSS INTRNT XPRS PAY PER USE

It was explained to me by two different BB techs at Cingular that the WIX data connnect was replaced by "DATA CONNECT ISP" and this is now the correct package. This is as of a phone call on Friday 1/27/05 - some have said that Cingular has removed the ability to do what we are trying to do here. I am wondering if DATA CONNECT ISP really has nothing to do with WIX DATA CONNECT and the support is just now "gone" ?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

- APN for ISP.CINGULAR is set in modem config extra options

- Username/password all set as the threads discuss for cingular APN access.

Seems I followed all the advice I found after hours of searching, still no luck. This post is out of despiration at this point (Smile)

Thanks!

I also am waiting for a solution to the PPP 734 error. My account is a business account so I am unable to have changes made to it. I don't know if I have the DATA CONNECT ISP or other options on the account.

Try installing the new OS4 that just came out for the 7290.

Mark,
Here is where i am at for everything...

Unit: 7290
Carrier: Cingular
Handheld Manager: 4.0.0.34
Desktop Manager: 3.6.3.10
BES server version: Unknown for now...
OS: 4.0.0.219

As soon as i saw that new version from Cingular I jumped on it. No impact to the 734. I have tried removing the modem and reinstalling it. I am going to try the v4 of the desktop software now.

Could the 734 be caused by the BES server?

My admins wont answer my ?s. Support sucks at our company for this. But at least we have it!

I should have mentioned that I am using a 8100 Pearl and the same settings for the 7290 worked for my pearl.

I know other Pearl users are having the same problem w/ Cingular/ATT and this is the fix.

i remember browsing this post a while back and i set up my 7290 with relative ease

now, i'm having issues with a new pearl, new laptop, and I'm hoping the switch to at&t hasn't jacked anything up.

alas, i'm getting the 734 error and i've been through the settings numerous times
