We maintain a free benchmark application for BlackBerry devices and some users with OS version 4.1 installed reported different speed index.
It seems a 4.1 device is 10% faster than running 4.0 or 3.7. So RIM obviously improved the Virtual Java Machine.
Users with a device running 4.1 and willing to install the BenchMark application may contact me.
BTW: The upcomming 8700 seems to be four times faster (speedindex 281.2) than a 7290
