In an application, I am required to type my user id and password. BlackBerry defaults to uppercase letters for the first letter. My password starts with a lowercase letter. Shifting the upper/lower case button does not work. How can I resolve this problem short of changing my password?

Sounds like a poorly written application.
What is it?

try entering space first, then the password, then back the whole password to the first space ... Like this _******. Then go to beginning and move the whole word back by deleting the space

Try typing the first letter, hitting backspace and then entering your password.
As Penguin asked -- what's the app?

Make the first character of your password a number or special character

If you read the first post, the OP is trying to avoid changing their password.
