If you have Windows 2000 and Outlook 2000, then Desktop Manager 4.2 is the only one that supports that combination.
One other option for email and contacts is to use Google Sync, syncing to Google contacts and calendar.

What version of Desktop Manager would suit a Vista user?

The best right now is DM 5. Works very well and fast.

What version of Outlook do you use? Outlook 2000 or earlier, it has to be DM 4.2. Outlook 2003/2007, then I would recommend DM 4.7 or 5.0.
